To all the bro's who said they can tune out anything when lifting, I agree. When in the zone nothing fucks you up. Or does it....

Here's some food for thought. Some news show ran a special along time ago on aggression. They studied prisoners who lifted weights. The cons lifted regularly over 4 weeks I think. But each 2 week period had them in 2 different gyms. The first 2 weeks was in a normal looking gym. The second 2 weeks was in a very similar room - same weights, machines, etc., EXCEPT this room's walls were painted pink.

They were told only that the first room was unavailable so as to not alarm them to the room being different.

The results, as you may have guessed - these same cons' lifts went down dramatically in weeks 3 & 4. Their aggression levels (test perhaps?) went down considerably in the room colored like Elton John's underwear. Now of course they noticed the walls, but they didn't think "this is gonna fuck up my lifts." They probably just did their workouts and proceeded to zone out.

It was an interesting study. Shows you that even though you may think you are tuning everything out, subconsciously some shit may be fuckin with ya.

I find myself forced to tune out that garbage they call music at the gym. And I do it well. Usually can't hear that 14 year old bitch sing "Crazy" Thank God. Yet when a song comes up that's got some nutz to it, I pick up on it and notice my rhythm change. Don't think it was conscious but who the hell knows...

I forgot where I read it, but the study showed that training rooms with sunlight (lots of windows) have an effect on recovery time in athletes. CU has a training room totally lit by the sun because of the study.

I know that a lot of shit fucks with you when you work out rather you want to let it or not. I can tune out a lot of shit, but one thing i hate is when im doing bench press, i have to have the bar line up perfectly with the lines on the ceiling or the supporting bars of the dropped ceiling, don't know why, just can't lift if it doesn't!!!

Damn right, im a senior in college and i lift in a downstairs gym back at home with black walls and concrete floors. When i switch from the college gym to my home gym, the home gym always brings about better workouts. Plus at my home gym the only girls you see are hard core, there are no distractions, everyone is there to work.

Great, now I'll be totally distracted from my training tryin' to figure out how that shit music they play is affecting my intensity levels! Thanks Spoon!

It is funny what motivates and what doesn't. I worked out in this gym in my home town for a while...the owner put up a picture of some hot chick in a bikini, right above the bench press. We made him take it down, cuz no one could lift with her starin' down on 'em...couldn't concentrate.

Rick, where the hell was that dungeon of a gym you're talkin' about? I worked out in one that sounds just like it at a junior college. It was located under a parking ramp there.
