I've been doing a little reading in some of the old posts about simple sugar and the benefits of avoiding them. I also like a soda now and then. Are diet sodas the killer I suspect them to be with all the crazy ass chemicals in them? Throw a newbie a bone! I know bignate should have a little knowledge on this one. IP: Logged |

oh man..ya had to call me out huh? lol i feel that its all relative to what you are trying to do with your body. dropping bodyfat, then basically i would try to avoid them. but if you are "offseason" or just a bit relaxed about your diet, then moderation is cool. as for diet sodas, i would think the only thing bad for you would be the phenylalanine if you are a phenylketonuric. or possibly saccharin if you still buy into the cancer theory. but recently i heard that it is being taken off of the carcinogen listing or something to that effect. something about the sheer amount of saccharin that they gave the mice, would equal to an amount not remotely possible to be consumed by humans. sounds like the fda biasing their testing to justify their means? hmmmm. sound familiar? but all in all, dont sweat the occasional sugar attack. just dont start wearing a krispy kreme "champine donut eater" shirt. lol. peace! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I don't think it is saccharin that you have to watch out for. It is the Nutrasweet (aspartame). That stuff is VERY carcinogenic. I have seen it in action an a rat liver and it is not pretty, of course that is at a ultra high dose. I think anything in moderation. If you look at a soda can a regular non diet will range from about 25-60 grams of carbohydrates. That is huge if you are on a low carb diet. Some of the diets range from 0-30 so you just have to watch it. I usually drink distilled water and just imagine that it is a Pepsi. Platinum IP: Logged |

The stories claiming that "diet" drinks, generally Nutrasweet-types, are killers are so weakly supported. One of the arguments is that when the aspartame ester is hydrolyzed, methanol is formed. We all know that methanol is toxic, but what is not told is that the amount that is released is 1000x's less than that found naturally in orange juice. One must remember that the definition of a poison is the dose. An easy argument against these claims is the sheer number of people who are using "diet" drinks with no adverse affects. The way the authors of these articles write, people should be dropping dead all around use with brain tumors and neurotoxicity. Last, saccharin has not been shown to be carcinogenic in humans. What has been shown is that it is species specific in terms of its carcinogenicity towards rat bladders. There is a different physiology in rats that increases the carcinogenicity of this compound. High dose studies in primates did not show bladder cancer increases. IP: Logged |

Simple sugars are great. The common prescription to avoid sugar is WRONG! Before any of you fools start taking insulin, just eat sugar. You'll get a repeatable burst of insulin. And all the benefits. Eat them as you would any other carb. Which is to say, don't just have a candy alone. Make sure you get some protein and fats too. IP: Logged |

Carbs from sugar are the same as carbs from a potato in terms of blood glucose levels. Your body burns them for energy. The difference is in nutrient value. Pepsi has negligible nutritional value. I go for the regular soda for the cals. And diet soda tastes like crap to me. If you eat right, take your vitamins, have a coke and smile. ghans IP: Logged |

I gotta test for all you sugar lovers out there that was shown to me by my track coach in 7th grade. 1) Hold your arms straight out, parallel to the floor, out to your sides, not in front. I've got ten bucks that sez she can push your arms down a hell of a lot easier than before you put that sugar in your system. Food for thought... Slim IP: Logged |

Are you saying that if you eat sugar after someone has just pushed down on your arm, you won't be able to produce as much force? Of course not, someone has just been pushing down on your arm, while you resisted!!! It is called muscular fatigue!!! Try the second part of the experiment the following day, after the arm has fully regained it's reserves. There will be no difference. This is reminiscent of the stupid Applied Kinesiology techniques to diagnose allergies. There is no scientific basis to this technique. IP: Logged |
