I have not worn a belt since my Junior year in High School, because I started to follow the Nebraska football training program. Now, my back is strong as hell, and I always squat and do power cleans without one. It has really built my midsection pretty nicely. I recommend it to everyone. Do you guys not wear belts also? Just kinda curious...

Note: I do have to wear a belt if I am maxing out (anything above 575) I'm not invincible to wearing a belt, but I don't like to.

A belt helps you lift more weight. It gives you something to push your abs out against. A belt does not protect the lower back, an old myth. I only wear a belt during squats. Your abs will be stronger if you never use a belt. Belts are not as important as lifters once thought. Some where one for fashion. There's lots of fag belts out there.

I use to always wear a belt when doing any floor lift (squat, power/hang clean, power/hang snatch, push press, I think you get the idea). 3 months ago I got rid of the belt and my lifts increased dramatically. The belt, I think, was making my form poor. Now I only use it for very heavey squats. Good point because I used to be a slave to my belt, now I am liberated!

I totally agree with training without a belt. The longer you can go with out a belt the better. For maxing out or anything over 80-85% ofcourse im wearing a belt. But it shows that by wearing a belt all the time actually weakens abdominal muscles. They become accustomed to the support that the belt provides that they soften up and do not contract as hard. Overall i agree with you all the way

Same here, only wear them when I'm doing weight that gets me all shaky. I got this one reebok pump belt which might sound kinda cheesy but, it makes me feel sturdier.

I wear a belt when I'm in the powerlifting mode, however, I feel I can't do as many reps with one because it affects my breathing in a negative way. Lack of oxygen can make me see all the pretty birds flying around my head!

I only wear a belt when I'm on a bulking cycle to help me look thinner

The above posts were correct in that belts should only be used for max lifts and that strengthening the mid and lower back is very important.

Used to wear one all the time....then stopped for the reasons above. I've noticed that my back has gotten stronger and I can lift heavier without any lower back pain. Threw that piece of junk in the garbage. It's much easier to breath without one too.

I wear a belt because a few years ago at the gym I hurt my back. I believe that if I were wearing a belt that would not have happened. Now I have to live with a herniated disk.

I wear a belt anytime I am in the gym lifting mainly because I have degenerating disc disease in about to vertabrae in my lower back. The belt helps me a lot. I tried without my belt and felt pain for about 2 days after.

I don't use a belt but sometimes I do use straps when my grip gets weak before i'm ready to quit.

I do not wear a weight belt any more either.

My back has strengthened, tremendously since not using them.

I only use a belt when Im maxing out on juice with squats or dead lifts.

Belts are useless accessories. Put them in the same category as doo-rags, and spandex pants.

Next thing you'll want to wear gloves. And cut the necks out of all your tee-shirts.

Lent my belt to a friend two years ago, he lost it. Never has been replaced. I am thinking of getting one for really heavy squats, but thats it.-John

I have seen a few backinjuries due to people not using their belt doing heavy deadlift (i train with some powerlifters) so i use it doing heavy squat and deadlift, but thats it, using it all the time, is just to uncomftable and just make the lower back weak.
