Is it really a leg workout without squats?
We'll call it a quad workout, how bout that?
I would recommend hack squats, lunges, flexions, extensions, and anything else that won't hurt your back. Try to atleast do light squat so you don't get too much out of the groove. Make sure you keep your flexibility in your hips. Oh yeah, leg press too of course.

Due to a lower back injury, I haven't been able to squat in three years. My leg workout consists of heavy leg press, leg extensions, seated and standing leg curls, and occasionally hacks. I've gained size in my quads as a result and I no longer have to walk around in constant pain. I believe that squats build the foundation, but past a certain point a lot of people don't need them.

Take a little while to strengthen your
lower back with stiff leg deadlifts and
good-mornings, just make sure your form
is strict as hell. Of course, hit the
leg press and hack squat, and stretch
daily (best after a shower).

Do back extensions and sit-ups to make your lower back feel better. Everytime I hurt my back I do tons of them, it works!

My left knee has been dislocated twice. I never used to squat but felt like I was wasting my time. Now I do, I get some pain, but i feel like jello when I leave the gym. I love it- makes me feel like a million bucks ;-)

Bro,

I HATE squats because of bad knees, but I have to totally agree with cj - there is SIMPLY NO WAY around them fuckers. They are THE mass builder for legs. It's like chest without bench, back without chins, etc.

Anyway I do feel there is an alternative that may work ALMOST as well. I too took squats out of my sched for a little while because of injury. BUT if you train with the other exercises MORE INTENSE than with the squats, you will still see gains. I knew squats were the shit but I had no other choice so I went balls to the wall on hacks, presses, sissys (really HATE those fuckers), extensions.

So you have to do exercises that mimick the squat as close as possible. First try squats with smith machine. You can take a little stress of the back with it. If that doesn't work then hacks are second in line. Next would be presses where you lay under the machine and kick up. Then regular presses.

Remember none of these puts the same stress on the legs as reg squats, but if you go balls to the wall on them, there is no way you won't still grow.

Try a set of hacks to failure, then no rest at all jump to leg presses to failure, then jump to extensions for a few and you should be burning like your on fire.

Make up for the lack by supersetting. Do any combo you feel comfortable with but SHOCK THE SHIT outta them suckers!

You should be limping home and I guarantee your legs won't miss squats for a while.

The guy in my gym with the biggest legs has never done a free weight squat in his life!

He sticks to heavy presses, hack squats, lunges etc and employs all the shocking principals!

I could squat until I am blue in the face for 7 years and never have legs like this guy... I am sure genetics plays apart though.

Moral of the story - it is possible to build good legs without squats, you just need more imagination!

My quads just blew up from doing lunges on the smith machine. One leg at a time. See how your back feels 'cause it's kind of a squat movement. I just rack on the weight and make my way up to some maxin' outs. After six sets if you don't feel like puking you're doing them wrong.

I laid off squats for a while and used the leg press instead. Yeah, I could press a lot more obviously but ya know it's not the same. So I went back to squats and really worked on form going very low, my ass can't touch the ground but it's close. Started doing 20 rep squats for 2-sets for a change of pace. Also I included smith machine lunges. I could hardly walk for two days, supersetting lunges with leg extentions. I don't know, I've had back surgery 5yrs. ago and still squat. But at 6'2" 42yrs. old I have to admitt I'm 20lbs. short of squatiing 400lbs deep, but I'm working at it. I havn't done juice yet either but I'm working on that too.
Ironically my back is strong, I stiff dead @ 305 for 8 reps. So what am I trying to say? I don't know! I'm just talking here!
