Yeah bro, back when I was 19 I developed a hernia. Although I had no pain with mine, except a pulling sensation in the groin area. Mine was a soft lump in the groin and was instantly identifiable as a hernia. My doc said it was genetic, not the weight training.

Sounds like you need to train your lower
back and abdominals. For lower back, I'd
recommend doing some stiff-leg deadlifts or
"good-mornings" and for abs I'd stick with
rope crunches on the dual cable machine.
Also, if no ones around (heh, heh) do the
abductor/adductor machines that all the
girls do. If you get that midsection
strong you probably will never get one
again

Will it require an operation?

is there a mass associated with your pain? and does it come out whenever you strain? if you answered yes or not sure then you need to see your doc. weightlifting will exacerbate your hernia and no matter how much you strengthen your lower back it ain't gonna go away. actually, there is a small increase (yearly) of getting an incarcerated hernia (gets stuck and loses blood supply) if you don't get it fixed. there are ways to fix it without being out of the gym for too long (i.e. 3-4 wks). take my advice, go see your primary care doc or a general surgeon.

Nate, I went through that scenerio last June.
Mine was just above the belly button.Didn't really hurt all the time but I could feel it when doing heavy lifts with squats or when doing abs. Also when I leaned out at 8% bodyfat I had this strange bulge. It was a hernia I had the operation and actually have a screen in me to keep everything in place.
Needless to say I lost 6 months in the gym. Couldn't start again until Jan 1 this year.
That sucked, guys were much bigger when I returned and I felt like a newbe in the gym again. But you gotta get it taken care of, and in your case I would definitly see a Doc.
Losing time in the gym may suck but if you let it go you can lose more than that!
Good luck Bro.

Mine required a surgery, it was a soft mass that appeared whenever I stood up, near the connection of leg with lower abs, along that line(groin area)

I just got over a hernia operation about 2 1/2 months ago. It sucked but the hernia never hurt. Go to a doctor it will only get worse. If you don't have anything putruding out like a lumo or swollen are, it could be just a pulled miscle. Nevertheless, go to a doctor ASAP.
Best of luck bro!

A hernia is usually noticeable by a bluge in the lower abdomen. You should get it checked out as soon as possible and will probably need surgery. I have heard of people having surgery and being back in about 4 weeks.

nate,
the preferred operation for someone like you who wants to return to his normal routine asap is a laparoscopic hernia repair - three small incisions (about 5mm each) instead of one large incision. find a surgeon in your area that does this -- not all of them do.

Shit this place is like home of the hernias. I never knew that they were this common, but since they come from lisfting heavy objects or pushing things too hard I am not suprised. Do yourself a favor and go to the doctor. My brother had one when he was born and the doctor told my mom over the phone to push it in. She was like "I think you better see this thing. Its not going in." Good thing she didn't listen...
