This may come across the wrong way but I feel wanting to compete is the best goal a bodybuilder can have. What I think the problem becomes is when it really is time to compete? You need to go to local shows and see what folks look like. You need to watch pre judge to see manadatories and how to do them corectly. I've trained 1 year for the show i have coming up because last year even though I was bigger than most I was not as the same caliper of folks on stage and realized I had work to do. I busted balls for 1 year and am certain I will do well hopefully win my class but I did the homework. there are folks who pass through my gym which is famous here in Texas for having winning bodybuilders who are on this board waiting to compete who honestly will be laughed off stage. That can be so detremental to mentalness and ruin the chance of you ever wanting to compete again or even train. Watch the shows and use honest apprasial and go for the win not just the chance to wear trunks go on stage and as exit just as quick. just a point of view.hard work, work on weak points and do your homework

I agree with some of your points, but competiton shouldn't be a measure of the successfulness of a bodybuilder. Remember that bodybuilding is ubjective, and regardless of how well you look, in someone else's opinion that day, you may not have the look they are looking for. I've known several guys that have totally gotten away from bodybuilding simply because they put everything they had in a show, and came up short. As a result, they don't even work out anymore.

Competition is good, but don't let it be your only measure.

One added note, you said that you know people that would be laughted off stage. Well, remind me and I will show you a person that should have never won, but did because she was the only one that enetered in her weight class. It's really disgusting when someone's tummy hangs over their prosing trunks, but as judges know, you can't judge based on looks alone, you have to judge based on looks compared to the competition.

I used to compete in teen contests, and
a few bs. strongman contests, but just
havent' had the time since I've aged; I
think by all means one should compete if
they can, but if not, just train because
you love it. BTW, you are definitely right
in that some of those guys up there win only
because they are the only ones who entered!
Less to compare to.
