Any roids that exhibit dihydrotestosterone (DHT) characteristics can cause hair loss. Propecia and proscar are 5-alpha reductase inhibitors that block the conversion of test in to DHT. However I would challenge the assessment that these Finasteride drugs would necessarily protect from the harmful effects of DHT like steriods. These drugs would work very well for testosterones because they would never be converted in to DHT as a result of the inhibition of 5-alpha reductase. Yet if a steriod is a DHT drivative or a DHT like molecule this inhibition of conversion would make no difference. This is because Finasteride only prevents the endogenis production of DH's, but does not block DH binding sites, making it ineffective against exogenis DHs. From www.rxlist.com monograph for Finasteride: Finasteride has no affinity for the androgen receptor and has no androgenic, antiandrogenic, estrogenic, antiestrogenic, or progestational effects. Inhibition of Type II 5a-reductase blocks the peripheral conversion of testosterone to DHT, resulting in significant decreases in serum and tissue DHT concentrations. Finasteride produces a rapid reduction in serum DHT concentration, reaching 65% suppression within 24 hours of oral dosing with a 1-mg tablet. |
