I just came off the diet and am bulking now. Strength is going up, and I'm using the biggest dumbells in my gym for shoulder presses, which are 90's. I taped some 5's to make them into 100's but this was real shitty and fell off. We don't have a racking system for a barbell shoulder press, but we do have a shoulder press machine. I was doing the dumbell press, side laterals, then the machine press. Question is should I pre-exhaust then do the dumbell presses? What do u suggest? ------------------

if that gym is your only option get some duct tape. I have the similar prob with my gym and I've duct taped 15lbs to either side of plate dummies, just cant drop em.

In high school (for my first year of bodybuilding!), I trained at a YMCA (which I worked at, so the membership was free), and was surrounded by old people and 12 year old "bench-freaks!" When I went off to college (currently!), I joined a Gold's and the difference in atmosphere is incredible. Here, I have something to prove. Here, I look around and am motivated! It is well worth it to change gyms!! ------------------

I am stuck with my school gym, and don't treat me like a fucking idiot. I would go somewhere else if I had the option. I asked for some ways to work around this problem besides taping, cuz that doesn't work to well... ------------------

I preexhaust using smith machine front presses then I move to the dumbells. Our gym goes up to 125's but once I start doing overhead dumbell presses with 105's it's a bitch to get those things in position since I don't have a partner. I literally have to do a clean and jerk and sit on the seated bench, this takes a lot out of me and then it's hard to get that first rep up. If you have some kind of shoulder press machine use that in a pyramid style fashion then move on to your dumbell presses. Improvise, adapt, overcome.....

MTHY: Request for bigger dumbell's... I'm at my schools rec. and usually when several people make a certain request about new equipment(that is resonable), they usually will accomidate you. Its worth a try, just get some friends together, and make a request. Good luck

I workout at a college gym as well, and we only have dumbells up to 95s.... ( we're missing one of the 80's too... grrrr...) Anyway, I understand that another gym isn't really a viable option -- Golds or wherever is $30 a month -- a pretty significant portion of most students' budget that is MUCH better spent on tuna fish and testosterone. Plus, the cost of the school gym is usually included in tuition. I would look into something called "Plate-Mates." Not sure who makes 'em, but you should be able to find 'em online... They are small magnetic weights designed to snap onto dumbells. They might work out a little better than duct tape ! LOL!

i'd preexhaust. try doing 1 & 1/3 lateral raises. if you haven't tried this basically you go all the way up with the dbells, come down 1/3 of the way, go back up, and then go all the way down. that's one. stick to 6-8 reps 3-4 sets. great for hypertrophy too.

im in the same boat, rack at school only goes up to 110. If you have a squat cage (where you can move the height of the rack pins) you can just put the shoulder press bench up to that and use it as a make shift set up. I did that in HS. Also, you could try doin heavy push presses before, dummie press, (Im not a big fan of machines for shoulders).

hehehe... You can buy Plate Mates here: http://store.yahoo.com/homegym/platemate.html But they might not work as well as I first thought ; they only come in 1.25 and 2.5lb increments! I don't think the whopping 5lbs you could add to each bell is worth the $60 for two pairs... LOL! Oh well.

Buy a couple of dumbell handles that you can use standard plates with. We've got a couple of these at my gym. You can easily get 200 lbs. on them.

plifter, that is some good advice, that would be perfect. I'll go out this weekend and hopefully pick up a pair. I guess I could use a couple 25 lb plates on them so I don't hog all the 10's. Thanks alot guys. ------------------

I know the feeling. Maxing out most of the leg machines at my gym. I have resorted to adding plates to standing calf raises

Glootz has a valid point....just take an extra pin and add a few plates. It works on most machines and it also attracts the babes |
