I need to know... my buddy harasses me for drinking protein shakes and eating red meat... he says I'm eating too much protein. I have always been under the assumption that the more protein the better, especially while bulking! Any thoughts, or better yet, any good reading material on the subject?

HEY BRO. YOUR BODY WILL TURN CARBS AND FATS INTO FAT BEFORE IT WILL PROTEIN. TELL YOUR BUDDY THAT CARBS MAKE YOU FAT, NOT PROTEIN OR FAT. THIS IS DUE TO HORMONAL RESPONSES WITHIN YOUR BODY TO THE FOODS YOU EAT.

A GOOD RULE OF THUMB FOR ANY LIFTER IS TO EAT 1 TO 1.5 GRAMS OF PROTEIN PER POUND OF BODY WEIGHT EVERY DAY. IF YOU WANT TO STAY LEAN, CUT YOUR CARBS.

ON MY LAST DIET, I LOST TWENTY POUNDS OF WATER AND FAT EATING 300 GRAMS OF PROTEIN, 600 GRAMS OF FAT, AND 30 GRAMS OR LESS OF CARBS PER DAY. I FELT GREAT, TOO. I DIDN'T LOSE ANY STRENGTH BUT INSTEAD BECAME STRONGER.

Im my opinion, a calorie that is not burned is stored as glycogen and then to fat. Protein does have calories. Nothing scientific, just think that I remember my dietitian sister saying so.

In Lyle McDonalds book, "The Ketogenic Diet," He says that for every gram of protein consumed, .58 grams of glucose gets produced.

Basically, over consumption of macronutrients will convert to fat. That is why you need to get your ratios down. If you consume less carbs, than protein should go up and vice versa. I think a heavy trainer should take in 2-2.5grams per lb of lean body weight, but that's just my opinion and opinions vary greatly on this topic.

The reason why protein is less efficient at being
layed down as fat is bacause of the thermic
nature of foods.

Imagine you consumed a 100% protein
diet, a 100% fat diet, and a 100% carb diet.
(BTW, the all-fat diet does NOT develop
ketosis. Entirely different story)
And you ate 6000Kcal in each one, however
you etabolic rate is only 5000Kcal.
You have then created a caloric surplus
that will be diverted to fat stores.
But, here is the kicker: 25% of the calories
of protein are lost in digestion(thermogenic),
10% of carbs are lost, and 3% of fat is lost.

So, in the protein diet only 750Kcal get
converted to fat.F(g)=84g
In the all carb diet 900Kcal get converted
to fat. Fat(g)=100g
In the all-fat diet, 970Kcal get converted
to fat. Fat(g)=108g

So, as you can see you'll gain less weight
by overeating protein than carbs or fat.

Godspeed
