I used to think that if I was bulking that there was no need to do cardio, WRONG!! There are many benefits to cardio..For one your heart is much healthier when you regularly perform some type of cardio training. Cardio is also an excellent way to lower blood pressure levels. But most of all I have noticed that when bulking my body doesnt want any more calories than it really needs.this is were the cardio comes into play. Too much cardio on a bulking program is a bad thing because you obviously wont gain any bodyweight if you are burning more calories then you are taking in. It also seems that there is better nutrient uptake within the body when a moderate amount of cardio is performed several times per week. What types of cardio are good for bodybuilders/strength athletes??? I love martial arts and lately I have been doing Jiu Jitsu. This is by far the most strenuous art I have studied. We literally grapple for an hour each glass. Grappling has proved to be even more strenuous than sprints!! I do the Jiu Jitsu only once per week so its not overwhelming. A world renowned strength coach wrote an article calledWALK OR DIE. Most people dont consider walking cardio, but a brisk walk for 15-30 minutes per day does wonders for your body. Improved function in: joints, muscle elasticity, appetite increases and heart becomes stronger. In the summer time when I train for strongman competitions I do a lot of sled dragging and hill sprints. We sprint up a 150-yard hill pulling 100 lbs. in a sled. THIS IS KILLER!! We also do a lot of sled dragging using just walking speed. This really builds the hamstrings and glutes and stretches out the body at the same time. We always pull the sled the day after a leg day when the legs are sore. This helps to get the soreness out of the legs and they heal quicker and at the same time the body becomes more efficient through an increase in work capacity. Sorry if I rambled on too much, but this post helps me relearn myself why cardio is so important. I have a tendency to get lazy in the winter because its cold outside. When you find a level of cardio that is good for you, without over trainingyou will begin to realize what a little cardio can do for your appetite and other bodily functions. Any way I look at it I see it as a win, win situation. | ||
