I posted this yesterday, but never got any real answers or something that led me to an answer, and after the board went down I think this post was destroyed. Well heres the situation. I am trying to calculate my bf and I keep getting numbers that I find extremely hard to believe. I am doing the reading with an accu-measure fat caliper. The instructions say to press with the thumb where indicated on the Accu-Measure until you feel a slight click. The slide member will automatically stop at the correct measurement, after reading the measurement repeat 2 more times and use all 3 measurements as your average. After you finish these steps refer to the body fat interpretation chart on the reverse side to determine your body fat %. So I will do this right now my self. 1st measurement 4mm, 2nd 4mm, 3rd 4mm, so the average is 4mm. Now I have to refer to the Body Fat Interpretation Chart, and it says males 21-25 with a measurement of 4-5mm have a body fat ratio of 4.9% I just find this very hard to believe. Can you think of anything thats being done wrong here?

There are so many ways to figure out your body fat. In the preformance lab that at work at, we use a 5 site, YMCA calculation. Anything that is based on the ACSM guidlines will give you pretty accurate representaion of your bodyfat. Keep in mind that skin fold calipers will vary as much as 15%. If payed less than $150 for yours, then they are probably crap, and will give you crap results. On top of that, most people aren't as lean as they think. If you want help, take your skinfolds again, e-mail your results to me, and I will calculater your body fat for you. Don't just take 3 random numbers and average them together. What you are looking for are 2 numbers and the average of them. The only thing is that you want to keep retaking the same site until you get 2 numbers that are at close to one another. This is done by looking at how precise your calipers are, then multiplying that number by 3. That is the range that the numbers need to be in of one another. So if the precsion of your calipers is 1mm, then the numbers must be within 3mm of one another.
