Rats get hooked on testosterone.(degree to which anabolic steroids are addictive is examined)(Brief Article)
Issue: Nov 13, 1999

Teenagers and others looking to sculpt the perfect body often abuse anabolic steroids, compounds that mimic the body's natural hormone testosterone in their ability to promote muscle growth. About a decade ago, scientists suggested that users of the drugs may become addicted to them, much like cocaine or heroin.

Now, for the first time, researchers have shown that rats will self-administer testosterone, one of the traditional signs that a compound is addictive. In one experiment by Luke Johnson of the Yale University School of Medicine and his colleagues, rats that liked either a grape- or an orange-flavored drink gradually switched preference if the less-favored drink was laced with testosterone. In a second test, rats given the choice of two holes quickly learn to place their nose in the one that triggers an infusion of testosterone into their bloodstream via a catheter.

Like other addictive drugs, testosterone and its anabolic relatives may activate pleasure pathways in the brain, although perhaps not to as great an extent, suggest the researchers. "It's not as rewarding as cocaine, obviously," says Johnson.

Sounds like a smart bunch of rats to me.

This isn't a flame, just my personal opinion based on experience in the research field. I've done a lot of conditioned response experiments like this...they can be very misleading. For instance, the research can be very biased for whoever is taking the readings, calculating the results and coming to the conclusions. It could have been that the testosterone tasted better to the rats in the liquid than liquid without testosterone. Or even the experiment could have been biased for these conclusions because of personal gain for the experimenter...there has been much effort put into this idea that steriods are addictive. Maybe the experimenter is strechting the results a little bit.

Personally, I don't believe there are any pleasure reinforcing properties of testosterone:
Testosterone activates steriod receptors, not dopaminergic receptors. Steriod receptors are slow acting, while dopamine receptors tend to be fast acting in the nucleus accumbens (pleasure area of brain).

These are only my opinions, if anyone has any other opinions on this subject please add to this.

Wow, I didnt think you guys would strain yourselves so much. LOL
posted this more as a what the hell will they think of next item, not really as a question.

Biopsychfitness- I also come form the field of research. I personaly dont put much stock in these types of tests as they can be manipulated to prove just about anything.
s for stretching the results I think your right.

I to would have to agree there are notany pleasure reinforcing properties in testosterone. There maybe a small psychological addiction in some people that are merely addicted to the idea not the drug itself.

Good replies.

How can a scientific researcher describe cocainne as 'more rewarding'?

Strengthmonster, cocaine is more "rewarding" because it directly stimulates the reward center of the brain (nucleus accumbens). It is called the reward center because it is stimulated when anything positive or pleasurable (sex, eating, etc.) occurs naturally. Cocaine is not a positive reward itself, it has the biochemical equivalence of a reward. In other words, cocaine is not rewarding in it self, the brain only thinks it is. That's why it is one of the most addictive drugs to humans.
