While dieting I would only take a whey protein. Something like designer protein. Something easy to digest.

I have been told that it is a necessity to have protein in your system before bed due to the fact that protein degrades and passes thru the system within 2.5 hours of initial digestion. So, in my opinion, that means if you want to rebuild muscle overnight, you'd better keep your limited protein stores HIGH.

Of course, I am new to this, so take it with a grain of salt, too

I dont think protein is stored as fat. I believe that whatever amount your body doesnt use just passes through and out of your body. I may be wrong of course, but maybe someone else may clarify.

18g 1.5 inch. u have to make sure the protein gets good into the muscle, so when u stick the needle in, wiggle it around to make sure u penetrate the muscle nicely.. then shoot.

OKAY, YES YOU HAVE TO TAKE PROTEIN WITH YOU,,,IT WILL TURN INTO FAT IF IT HAS CARBS BUT IF ITS JUST A PROTEIN SHAKE IT WONT....WHAT ARE U WAITING FOR, GO AND DRINK THAT PROTEIN SHAKE!!!!!!

p.s. LONG LASTING PROTEIN WOULD BE BETTER THAN WHEY FOR THE NIGHT, BUT IF YOU ONLY HAVE WHEY THEN ITS OKAY.....

Protein or any other nutrient can be converted to bodyfat if you take in too much. It's easier to convert fat or carbs (esp. simple sugars) to fat, of course, but too much protein can make you fat as well. But for most of us that's not an issue.

I generally take protein before bed (maybe an hour before), and I prefer milk or casein since it lasts longer and will keep a positive nitrogen balance throughout the night. Whey gets assimilated too quickly - you want it slow while you sleep.

I am not dieting, but rather I am trying to gain. I take 120 gr of protein and 3000 calories, (mostly maltodextrin) in the 3hrs before I go to bed.

Yeah but stay away from the mass drinks with loads of maltodextrin or sugars in and get a pure protein. I wake in the middle of the night and have another.

Take protein an hour before sleep and straight away in the morning

These are both protein windows when synthesis and assimilation is high, as immediately after a workout.

Simple as that

a mix of different proteins would be ideal...
proteinfactory.com has a night time formula...not the greatest taste...considering I forgot to put a flavor down...ugh....anyway...put some flax or hemp oil with it to slow down digestion even more...good luck..I cut the amount in half when I am dieting....

Always drink one before bed, regardless of cutting or bulking. I like to add some flax seed oil to try to slow down the absorbtion rate = stay anabolic longer.

People -

Taking protein just before bed (whether dieting or not dieting) will NOT turn to fat if you have not exceeded you caloric maintenance level. Yes, you need extra calories to fuel lean mass growth, but calories ABOVE this level translates into fat! This is NOT rocket science !!!

However, protein JUST before bed might keep you awake for a while.............

Protein metabolism is quite high while sleeping. Take one. It won't hurt you. Protein shakes don't have that many calories unless it is a weight gainer shake.

What is wrong with maltodextrin if you are trying to gain? It is a complex, not simple carb.

maltodextrin is a maltose, that will turn (pardon my inaccurate medical terms =) into glucose in your digestion. so if you are trying to cut, don't use maltodextrin, except in your recovery drink of course.

This has always been a very controversial subject. While dieting I do drink a protein shake before bed. However, I believe that certain factors must be determined. I notice that your name is natural wonder so I'm taking it that you are not on steroids. How is your metabolism? Are you a long limbed person? Are you cut all year? If you find that you have a slower metabolism and tend to naturally hold fat than I would not recommend you drinking the protein shake before bed. If you are a very lean person with an extremely fast metabolism, than I would drink it before bed time. If you are on anabolic steroids, I would deffinately take it before bed time no matter what kind of metabolism you have. Protein intake can be very complicated. Science and anatomy are essential when dieting like this. Everyones body is different. This is as simple as I can put it, the chemical processes that take place after eating are different for the three types of builds (ecto, endo, meso. This is only my theory, and it may not even be correct. It is just my opinion.

I'd go with a whey/casein combo. Calcium Casinate (casein) is a form of protein that takes longer to digest than straight whey. Cottage cheese also has this form in it - good snack before bed - cutting or gaining. $.02
