It's a prime time to do cardio as amatter of fact. Either first thing in the morning on an empty stomach or imediately following weight training are the best times to perform cardio. Following a lifting sesion you have depleated a great deal of glycogen...thus your body has a need for energy as you have used it up. The energy it will turn to will be fat as you have depleated the glycogen in your muscles. Same principal in the morning. Glycogen stores are low and your body will need to turn to stored energy to power the body through a cardio session.

i thought doing cardio before a workout will strip you of strength

Doing cardio BEFORE weight training is most certainly a no-no. It will strip you of strength because it drains your muscles of glycogen. Very catabolic environment. Morning or AFTER your lift is when it should be done.

Agreee with Beezers, either first thing in morning on empty stomach or after training when muscle glycogen is low/depleted.

Well just answer me this, if you do cardio after weight training do you wait until the cardio is done before you replenish your system with protein and carbs? I'd like to know if anybody takes anything in between or waits until the end?

I am interested in jocko's question as well. I usually take some carbs right before a workout, and slam more carbs right afrer I am done (with creatine and glutamine in each). Then wait until the post-workout drink is out of my stomach, then have a protein drink. If I want to maximize my cardio, must I forego any carbs and such until after?

Well, if the goal is to burn fat you should go straight from weight training to cardio WITHOUT taking in any energy. Like a previous post said; your glycogen levels have been largely depleted after a weight training workout and your body is primed for burning fat if the intensity is not too high. If you take a proteinshake or only carbs in between you will have "ruined" the whole effect. Your body will start releasing insulin because of the carbs in your drink and you will have no chance in burning fat, your body will instead choose the easiest available nutrient - which is the glucose from the drink you just consumed! I have done cardio first thing in the morning and following workouts. I found that I lost weight/fat at a much quicker and more efficient rate when it was performed first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. ------------------ No matter how hard you work, there is always someone working harder. |
