this is intended to be a serious post, so if you wanna be a faggot say your little .02 one-liner and go fuck yourself. my calves have gone from 15.5 to 17.25 and have hit a plateau. calves seem largly genetic, either you have them or you don't. I wanna know how much size you guys have gained in your calves and whether or not steriods played a large roll in it? I'm asking this mostly out of observations I have made, not because I need workout advice. "SO HOW MANY INCHES HAVE YOU GUYS PUT ON YOUR CALVES?"

I'm not asking you guys how small your calves are, just how many inches you've gained. don't be a pussy and avoid the question. you guys do lift weights right?... J/K answer the question.

I am lucky in that area, my calves grow extreamly easy with heavy movements. I normally don`t work them very often. They get out of proportion to my thighs. I wish I had the same luck in gaining thigh mass fast, no luck there. ------------------

I am shooting most of my prop in the calves, and they are finally starting to grow some. Walking sux though

My calves are the worst. They don't grow for crap. When I ran cross-country it was ok, but now they're an embarrassment. And you're right, it is genetic.

I have put about two inches on my calves and it was hard ass work. My genetics suck when it comes to calves, very long and slender. I just started training them twice a week and just bombed them. I didn't stop working them until I got that nice burn in them. I made pretty good gains of a Poliquin calf routine I found through searching on T-Mag.

I am like the mechanic I have good genetics, but since I started training 10 years ago (all natural) I have gained about 4 1/2 inches now 19 3/4 cold and I never train calves directly. lucky I guess.

I ussually work my calves only before a contest to help cut them up a little more. I have short calves and am extreamly gifted in the department...I weigh in at 156lbs at 5'5 4.1% bf on stage, my calves measured in at 17 1/4 inches...my quads measured in at 25 1/2 inches....I have great genetics down there...I think I added very little size with the use of gear, I added a lot more size with gear to my underdeveloped (and still too little) chest and triceps... I would trade my calves to anyone for a good set of developed triceps.... ------------------

I lifted for 10 years before I ever trained calves. (yeah, I looked fucked up with 13" calves and 17" arms) Since then I've put 2.5" on them. I do 3-6 set 3 days a week.

The gastrocs are fast twitch, so when you're doing standing calf work, keep your reps low, explosive positive, slow negative, reps under 8. The soleus is slow twitch, when doing seated calves, keep reps higher, 15-20. Also on both seated and standing, do at least a 1 second pause in the bottom position, the stretch is very beneficial. I learned all this stuff from Charles Poliquin's books, and alll I can say is that it REALLY helped me. No more KFC syndrome.

When I made a weight gain of about 50 pounds in 9 months I worked calves only sporadically, but walked a lot of stairs. My calves grew almost 2 inches. I'm sure simply supporting my extra weight played a large part of it. Rugger

I train my calves hard as hell. They have always been large, but just the past couple of years is when i noticed the growth. Last summer at my first contest in August, they measured about 16 inches. Now, they measure 17 1/2" and look enormous. Im not even close to being the biggest guy on here, but for being 5'10", & 206, i think im doing fairly well with my calves. They are only an inch behind my arms, but i need to stunt some more quad growth, because they only measure 26 inches right now, and they need to be bumped! I always use seated calf, standing calf, and donkey calf machines. Never rest more than 30 seconds between sets, and load as much weight as possible. Go for strict reps, and squeeze at the top, hold for 2, and squeeze at the bottom and hold for 2. Its given me great results from doing it like this. Every other calf workout, i will superset them too. Thats another ball game, though. ------------------ EMAIL: [email protected]

There is this 40+ overweight guy at my gym with the biggest ripped calves I have ever seen. All he does is use the stair stepper.

Fat guys always have big calves. I have lost weight, and my calves are big, and I'm 6'3. I haven't measured, but I train calves on Monday and Thursday. Monday would be medium to low reps and heavy weight, and then Thursday I do 2 plates on a side and pump out 100 in 4 sets. Talk about a fucking burn...try something like that. Shock them Thursday, and add size on Tuesday. Works good for me.

The MeanOne HAD small calf syndrom, but here are a couple things I learned instinctively, which seems to have already been posted. Standing calf raises - ultra heavy, low reps. I'm to the piont in time now where I find some guy in the gym to stand on top of the shoulder bars of the standing calf raises so I can hit failure by the 7-10th rep. It really depends on how heavy the person on top is as to where I fail, lol. Normally speaking, when you 240lbs, ripped to the piont of having a xmas tree in your back, and you tell some little 160-190 guys to jump on top of the machine, they get all excited that you chose THEM out of everyone else in the gym to be your weight bitch, lol. Seated Calf Raise - I always so 20+ reps, and it HURTS LIKE HELL!, I sometimes get cramped up right in the middle of a set, so I go hobbling out of the gym, but if you can take it, GO FOR IT! Winstrol/Suspension sit injections, have added over an inch to each calf with these. Don't ask me why, I know the theory of site injecting a steriod will not produce localized growth, but they weren't oil based, so I know it's not the Synthol effect. Painful, but it worked! Squats - yes squats! I started to up my reps and use less of a powerlifter form and kept the bar higher on the traps, stood up straighter, and the bitch of trying to keep yourself from toppling over backwards or frontwards will do amazing things for your calves...no joke. For detail work, I run, simple as that...you can't get a much higher volume of work than what running 3 miles will do to you after hitting calves hard a few hours before. (I'm up to 22 1/3 inches, the left is SLIGHTLY unproportionate, just by like 1/10 of an inch smaller in diameter than the right...)

I am cursed with very skinny and long calves. I worked them for about 3 years once a week during my leg workout and I don't think I added more than 1/2" in that time. So last summer, I started frying them 2 to 3 times a week for about 3 months like I have before to bring up other lagging body parts. Did I see results? I didn't added a single quarter inch. However, from all the extra work they did get stronger, and all that did was cause a muscle imbalance with the muscles in the front of the shin and give me tear-jerking shin splints for about 2 months. So gentlemen, does anyone have a suggestion for the genetically ungifted to make these bitches grow?

MeanOne, if you have some 22 1/3" calves, then bitch you better be taking a pic and showing me! That is outstanding work my friend. Now, they are cut up a little right? Amazing. ------------------ EMAIL: [email protected]

I dont usually train mine anylonger with weights. I have the mass I want, but am working on shaping them. I used to use a shitload of weight on calves, now just bodyweight 1x per week. I think calves need to be trained only 1x per week, but I used to train them every sunday for about 30min exclusively. I used alot of heavy movements supersetted with lite movements. I would say I have put about 3.5" on each one. [This message has been edited by WC (edited March 01, 2001).]

Hardcore, I'm current at about 7% BF via skinfold measurements, so yes, they are fairly well defined. I'm always my hugest critic, and in my opinion, the are VERY think when seen from the side (Front to back thickness), but they could stand to be a little wider. Prehaps I will take a pic of my left calf, but not my right one (Has a tattoo on it that could be used as an "Identifying Mark" by authorities....not that I am doing something illegal [all my riods are prescribed to me] I just don't want any links.) Oh, I kinda forgot to mention on thing...okay okay, synthol helped a little, lol. I figured with my previous posts about synthol that didn't need to be said, but I'm just being fair now... -Chilli and Chesse hot dog and fries heartburn SUCKS!-

I've got 16' calves at 5'6 175. I never ever have trained calves. It's just genetics. |
