Hey

I am the lucky member of a very cardio and machine orientated gymn, now say you had the option of training incline bench with a:

smith machine
dumbells

Which would you opt for? I dont have the option of a spotter, I have a decent bench with olympic bar at home.

Ive read about machines not making much difference apart from the stabilizer muscles, but I'm not convinced, for starters you get a false sense of strength as an olympic bar alone probably weighs about 10k? a smith machine bar does not, plus there is resistance on the rails on the smith machine.

But what about dumbells? I think this will require stronger shoulders before I even get up to a weight to challenge my chest muscles?

Cheers

Incorporate the dumbells then end with the smith. The smith balances shit for you. Free weight barbell bench or incline, smith machine, dumbells, cables, machines etc all place different tensions and resistances on your muscles stimulating different fibers. All our needed to develop a complete muscle.

Havoc is correct. Do the free weights first and switch to the Smith for more of a "feel the weight" rather than move the weight.

Sound advice,thanks alot.

I'll opt for the Dumbells first then and then the smith machine for a couple more sets.

I hate usign the Smith Machine anyway, it just doesnt feel the real deal, know what I mean? Plus it hurts your wrists cuz you gotta rotate the thing off the hooks.

Thanks!!

I hate the smith machine. I see no reason to have one in the gym whatsoever. Definitely go with dumbells (don't need a spotter - just drop them to the sides) or even one of those incline press machines if you have one.
D.

The max weight the dumbells go up to in my gymn is 30k aswell, pretty low huh.

I think my gymn was built for hamsters.
