You can do it, its harder but it can be done. You just have to alter your routine and stay focused. It takes a little extra to push yourself for those 2 extra reps without someone there, but once you l;earn to do it you can actually make your sessions more intense imho. ------------------ IP: Logged |

BIZ (and bro's) It is damn near impossible to gain without a training partner. I think training partners are like girls in a way - there are plenty of them out there, but the quality ones are already taken....no offense to the ladies....just hate working out alone. Matt IP: Logged |

well I have kind of the opposite problem right now- the guy that I train with is overly focused on the amount of weight he can lift- and he wants to train chest twice a week which I cannot do- he doesnt realize that using heavy weight for low reps is more central nervous system training from which recovery is faster-in addition, he sacrifices form for weight far too often- he is all about the bench press- but he does lift pretty hard and occasionaly actually listens to me-I am a FORM FASCIST- okay a little cheating, once in a while, but with good form. the problem for me is that he has been lifting for a long time, he has pretty good genetics too, so it is hard convince him of the fallacy of absolute heavyist weight theory- But slowly I am bringing him into the light of training variation and good form. BTW- I realize that the situation is different than yours BIZ but I gotta complain about my training partner sometime, so I jumped in on the quitter training partner thread. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I CAN RELATE BIZ. I'M 39 AND NEVER BEEN MARRIED. I LIVE A HELL OF A LIFE AND NEED TO STAY IN SHAPE BEING SINGLE. I ALWAYS HAVE GUYS THAT ARE JUST GETTING DIVORCED THAT WANT TO START WORKING OUT. THEY'VE BEEN MARRIED FOR AWHILE AND THEN THEY'RE SUDDENLY SINGLE WHEN THEY REALIZE THEY TURNED INTO FAT ASSES AND NOW THEY HAVE TO GET IN SHAPE, BUT AS SOON AS THEY GET A NEW GIRLFRIEND THATS THE LAST YOU SEE OF THEM. SO, I JUST STICK WITH THE HARDCORE BROS IN THE GYM. WHEN EVER I NEED A SPOT, I CALL ONE OVER. IF NO-ONE IS THERE I USE DUMBBELLS FOR BENCHING ETC. I CAN GET A PRETTY GOOD WORKOUT. FOCUS ON YOURSELF BRO, FUCK THOSE WANNA BES. IP: Logged |

I hear ya. Most of my fucking training partners are a drag on my motivation. I'm the guy dragging their ass yo the gym motivating them to do another set. Meanwhile my turn their spacing off checking out the girls or the cracks on the wall. Now all my friends see the improvements ive been making. they say "hey you wanna work out together I need someone to motivate me". I say fuck you, training partners keep me from gains. IP: Logged |

biz, for the most part i agree about hard to gain without a partner.. but i havent had one in years and do better without.... ever try a routine that went 10, 8, 6, 15 for reps? i gained alot from it... strength and size... you take each set one rep from failure.... its in the flex mag with the y2k workout... give it a read. The guy I'm training with now is a goddamn slacker!! I tell him what we're gonna do and his response is always "so we can get big" (thinks its an overnight process)....always has excuses to NOT go and when he does go he has to leave within an hour...he ends up going like once a month- runs 10 minutes and thinks he's gonna have a 6-pack from doing that and 200 situps- and then he'll do two thinsg for a bodypart and claim he's sore....WAAAAAAAAH!!! I might get flamed for this, but I train w/ my girlfriend. She's reasonably strong, so on the big exercises she does her sets and then I'm ready to warm up. It really doesn't take any extra time, since we keep our rest time to a minimum on each exercise (we do get quite a bit of rest between exercises, though, because of this structure). We also time each other's rep cadence. Smaller exercises and movements done on weight stack apparatus are no problem at all. She occasionally jokes about wanting to go on a cycle, but I don't think she ever will, although I whacked her w/ some EQ once when she broke her toes. IP: Logged |

I spend about 80% of my time on the road for work. So I just ask someone in the gym to spot me when I need it. You can pick out the Bros from the rest. Most of them are cool as long as you are there to work and not just checking out the meat. ( no offense ladies) ------------------ IP: Logged |

my training partner is a fairweather partner for the most part, as long as nothing too important is going on, then its cool to hit the gym. tonight he is banging,(i know...i shouldnt knock him for it) but i went to the gym anyways and enjoyed myself because i didnt have to teach for a change. hes relatively new to weight training and not into bb at all. but ill give him this, he trains hard when he goes. i think training partners are like shoes, they are cool for a while then they get old and you wear them out...heh heh. hang in there BIZ, perserverance and tolerance will make you strong as well. keep growing. bignate73 ------------------ IP: Logged |

Yes, it is tough to work out by yourself, but like many of you have said, if you don't have someone as committed as yourself then they are just "in your way". On the sets where you want to really push it I just use dumbells to get the maximum static press. It's difficult to find someone with the same passion for intensity!!!! deltman IP: Logged |

I totally agree with Biz. I usually train 4 times per wk , at 6:30 PM after work. I am married and I am having within a week my first child ! It's not easy you see ? But I keep going on ! And I am lucky now as I have found a guy and we always train together , same day same hour , nearly same exercises. And training always with the same person is different then if you ask help each time from a different person depending on who you find in the gym ..... it's totally different. You can't pump , as Biz says , to your maximum potential. IP: Logged |

I can definately relate. When I was first starting out I had a W/O partner, but I always had to push his motivation to go to the gym. Especially when it was a nice warm day! That was about three years ago and the partner only lasted 6 months. Since then I have gone on my own and just ask for a spot when I need it. It sucks in a way, but at least it gets done! That's why attentive trainers are beneficial to a gym. That way you can ask them to help you out, but as we all know, that's not always the case because they never seem to be around when you need them most of the time. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I can realate also. I have had only 1 good training partner in my short 15 years of training. We only got to train together for 3 months because we were both in the Corps together and got orders to different duty stations. But I made more gains in those three months than any other time with a partner. I have given up on all partners! I just put on the head phones...and zone out all other distractions. EXCEPT for the idiot who walks in between me and the mirror with the 15lbs dumbbells in his hand....that I can not ignore! I want to kill those kind of spandex wearing jerks with 15inch quads! I have been training with my training partner for a few months now... we work are days around setting a time to train together, whether in the afternoon or the evening... EXCEPT on leg day! I have NEVER and I mean NEVER trained legs with this guy. Just yesterday was leg day, he went in the afternoon and I went in the evening, his excuse was I had to meet these girls tonight. Bad excuse, I was meeting them with him and this was way after training time! Problem is he's a little soft when it comes to legs. A great leg workout is a few leg extensions and some leg curls. Whoooaaaa! Now thats hard work! So we're with these girls last night and he setting up a time to goto the gym... I told him I aint going with you, you cant do legs with me I cant do delts with you. ------------------ [This message has been edited by BuffEnuf (edited March 23, 2000).] IP: Logged |

Never had a training partner....slowly gathered enough equipment to have my own little gym in my basement....self-spotting bench and squat....the only problem I have is when I want to get really heavy on the dumbells, its harder than hell getting them into position on my own......other than that, I'm growing like a weed !!
