When I first started training, the goal was to get as strong and huge as possible. When you thumb through THE LIES about poundages in the mags.,as a beginner you think,I have so far to go.It can be very discouraging. As time goes on and everything works in sync, and you add quality mass, you notice that you are not benching 500 for 20 reps,or squatting 600 for sets of 35 reps. Thumb through some powerlifting mags., and notice the world record poundages for max lifts. I've yet to see anyone personally in front of my eyes bench 500 for 20.Friends of mine have set bench press records, over 500 at 275 lbs. My point is ,don't believe these poundages and try to duplicate these in the gym,for you will get hurt,or wind up crippled,I've seen it happen. If so called bodybuilding claims by Greg Kovacs and others are more than powerlifters WHY? They're all lies. Powerlifters train for strength,That's their specialty. Keep training hard beginners and intermediates and don't get discouraged, although I do believe there is a direct correlation between strength and size.Lift properly, the strength will come IP: Logged |

You're right bighurt, to me the whole poundage thing is way out of proportion. There are buddies of mine that can lift a great deal more than me, however, my muscle to bodyfat ratio is much better than theirs. Thus.......I LOOK BETTER than they do. And isn't that what it's all about? Good Post! deltman IP: Logged |

my thoughts.... exactly, train hard with good form and you'll be using more weight soon enough and packing on good quality shape as well. those that you see banging up the weight with bad form will fall to the wayside to injury. train smart and not with your ego, you can bring out the ego when you reap the benefits of your humbleness. hmmm....wow, was that deep or what??? back to meditation i go. peace!!!! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I agree. The whole poundage thing is so blown out of proportion...its not the amount of weight you put up..its the intensity and balls to the wall attitude that gets results. Really alot if not all is based on genetics..i.e. how the muscle is attatched to the skeleton..and what not..that also in turn determines alot on which side of your body is stronger... All in all though I agree..fuck kovacs.. Later, WCP

I agree that a lot of poundages are greatly exagerated.

We all know fatass football players and track athletes that can lift a small car, and they look like shit! Screw how much you can lift. Go for the look that gets the touch. That is what bodybuilding is all about! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think that strenght is important. Not like on the wrolds strongest man competition but to some degree. I tend to disagre, that it just for the looks. I like the feeling of being powerfull and strong. I think that how much you bench or deadlift is not important. What is is practical strenght, the strenght that you have outside the gym. Wouldn't you look real silly if a friend of yours asked you to help them move, and you have a good looking body, but couldn't help carry his dresser up a flight of staris. Basicaly, poundage and strenght in the gym doesn't matter, however, pratical strenght does. Just my $0.02. IP: Logged |
