-I choose to do both. I noticed when I am competing, I tend to see some bodybuilders with noticeably different size biceps, and sometimes differently shaped pecs or shoulders. Like the shape is just off. Sometimes this is due to genetics, but when I talked to them, they all had one thing in common. Whatever the mismatch muscle was, they trained with dumbells only. The most common was biceps. All dumbell movements. This made me come to this conclusion for the irregularity. Everyone has slight variation in muscle symetry from their right and left sides. Myself, I have always felt the difference when curling and benching. I found that for a while when I went to dumbells, I was able to press and curl a lot of weight with less stress on my joints. I also found that I was having to balance the dumbells more carefully than the bar, and controlling the inner weight of each dumbell was giving different structure to my muscles than the barbells. Good structure! What started happening that I did'nt like was that people were starting to notice a slight imbalance between my left and right biceps, and slight variation between my triceps. I finally realized that because I had cut out all barbell movements, I had begun pushing up and curling the dbells differently. I had a friend of mine videotape my form, and what we found was amazing. My right side, weaker side, was moving the dumbells just ever so slightly different than my left. So I decided to start adding some barbell movements back in. I figured the bar would enable my weaker side to maintain the same motion as my dominant side. Have been doing it now for almost a year. Left Bicep as of April 99, 18 1/2", right 18 1/4". Present, Mar. 00, left bicep, 18 3/4", right is only a notch, mm under. I really want to say 3/4, but I'm not quite exactly even. However, the barbell did bring out the balance for me. Conclusion, I do both.

Both, they both have their pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses.
I prefer using DB over BB on pressing movements cause they require a more strict movement. On flat bench presses you can really exhaust the pecs well using DB. I do use BB for these also as it keeps the shock factor relevant. The only downfall to pressing with BB is the locked position you have to keep.
Well thats my .02

Interesting idea, i'm sure you're right, my left arm, when curling, always moves the weight differently.

I always use both. Generally switching workout, i will have an exculsivly dumbell workout and then an exclusively barbell one , then a mix.
