Here is a question I was asked at the gym last night. Do you burn fat while swimming? On one side you can say that you don't because your body doesn't sweat in the water. To burn fat thermogenicly, you have to sweat. The other side says that anytime you burn calories exercising, you'll lose fat. Your body can't distinquish between fat calories or other calories. Fat calories are just harder to burn then simple calories. Any help guys? I didn't have an answer for them. IP: Logged |

You definately burn fat while swimming. I swam competitively all the way through college. If you want to shed weight and get ripped, swimming is the way to go, no roids needed. As far as sweating while swimming, you do sweat but you don't feel it because you're surrounded by water. Next time you finish a swimming workout, get out of the pool immediately and dry off. Sit down for a few minutes while your heart is still racing and watch the sweat start pouring. IP: Logged |

I actually prefer swimming to running or cycling because of the way it works out your whole body. It is one of the best ways to burn off calories. Yes, you do sweat, but you don't feel it (as Peanut said). You don't necessarily burn fat when you burn calories. The idea is that if you burn off calories during the day (and you get enough protein, vitamins, and minerals) then your body will have to burn the fat for energy. Gear helps with fat burning because it is anti-catabolic. Therefore, your body will have no choice but to burn fat (instead of muscle) for energy. Jon ------------------ IP: Logged |

Swimming is cardio. I sweat my ass off when I swim. And that's a real good point about feeling better the next day after a swim.....I'll BUMP that. Matt IP: Logged |

Swimming is the best exercise, builds up shoulders the most and cuts you up real nicely. IP: Logged |

Some theorys against swimming for fat loss do hold weight. You are boyant therfore not having to fight gravity= less calories burnt. Mamalian response to cold water, your body shuttles more blood to the heart, lungs and brain, and does its best to conserve energy,is not trying to burn fat.(by cold I mean below 98.60)(ever seen a ripped swimmer?nOT CUT i MEAN RIPPED?)NO IP: Logged |

Deep's right. I've read about studies showing that swimming did not burn as much fat as some other common forms of cardio, assuming the same amount of work done. One theory is that the cooling effect of the water on the body causes you to burn less fat. The Doctor IP: Logged |
