I have a Tanita weight scale that measures my bodyfat percentage. I was wondering how well it compares to other methods of BF% measuring. Is it a reliable piece of equipment?

Correct me if I am wrong, which I fairly often am, but I believe these scales measure bf% by sending an electric pulse through your body and measuring how long it takes to return. Electricity takes longer to travel through muscle mass than fat (due to water content).

Problem is though, variation in hydration levels will through these things completely out of whack. Calipers ought be more accurate if done right. Then again, a tape measure is probably more accurate, too.

I have heard that if you are completely hydrated that you can get a simiaccurate meassurement, but the problem is how can you tell if you are completely hydrated. I would geuss that they vairy around the 3%. You can go to your gym and get BF tested with computer calipers for around 5 bucks, then you will know for sure how much it vairys.

I have found that electrical resistance devices can be off by as much as 10% on average. The best is to use skin fold (cheapest) and use the measurements as an indication of bodyfat levels. IE, the thinner the skin the lower your levels. Saying you are 2% or 10% is a relative term. If the skin thickness in the stomach area is 16mm your kind poochy however, if it is 4mm or less then you are pretty damn lean.

So I use skin thickness as an indicator of my fat levels. I take readings at the triceps, mid-thigh, biceps, mid-back, hip, stomach (naval region). The thinner these get the leaner I get.
