First off, I just wanted to comment on the great changes of this board. It has evolved into a much better discussion forum over the years. I used to frequent this board regularly in its infancy a few years back, but had stopped due to ridiculous and unnecessary juvinile activity. Glad to see it's cleaned up. Anyway, back to the subject at hand, I tore my right pec just over three months ago doing flat bench. The area is still slightly tender and have resumed moderate training (execpt light for chest). Any suggestions as to speed recovery (drugs, excercises, etc)? Anyone with experirnce with muscle tears care to elaborate on their recovery (how long until they where able to train regularly, does it ever feel the same again, etc). Thanks in advance to ANY comments! IP: Logged |

OOOOOOOOOCHHHHHHHHHH ! I tore my left pec Oct 21 1998, just had surgery this December. You didn't mention how severe the tear was. Hopefully you've seen a good doc. I pulled the tendon ou of the insertion (at the bicep) and had some muscle tear within the pec minor. My first doc insisted that it would heal naturally...wrong ! Unless it is a very minor muscular tear,I would insist on surgery. I spent over year trying to heal naturally without any results. After the surgery, 6 weeks with my arm imobilized, 4 wks of rehab and I'm back in the gym today. Mail me if you need more info. BPP IP: Logged |

Thanks for the replies so far. GLS seems to work on cartilage dammage such as joints and ligaments and not much on muscle. The injury was not a full tear and did not come off at the insertion point. It was a moderate to severe tear, however. Massive brusing and dramatically reduced range of motion for several weeks. I don't wish it upon anyone! I need to get back and train properly again summer is approching. I've lost 20 lbs so far 5'8" 208 14%bf to 188 11%bf. My max bench was 405 at 198lbs. I tore my pec doing 365 going down on my 4th rep. IP: Logged |

Pec tears are tricky. You should try to get it operated on right after you tear it. If you wait, it will fuse into a not. Most people after tearing wait too long to get it taken care of. Let me know how your strength is after you get it taken care of. Suregery is necessary from what I understand. I have never heard of someone tearing it and it healed without surgery. Good luck. SO did you see a doc yet ? If the tear is ONLY muscle then it might heal itself but will take some time. My first doc I guess was too stupid to read the MRI's and assumed that my only damage was musclular. I tore mine at 385 on the 3rd lift. This should be a good example to all. Pressing this much puts too much stress on the tendons in the chest. If you must go heavy, use some dumbells. I've lost in excess of 35lbs and will have a large scar for my troubles. BPP IP: Logged |

All I can say is I am sorry, but you can come back strong (but you must be careful). One of my powerlifting coaches tore a pec. He has been much more cautious ever since. That's why I always do extensive warm-ups and stretching before a work out. Jon ------------------ IP: Logged |

Did you see the doc? If you did he should have prescribed physical therapy. If not there are some states that you do not need a scrpit for PT. They will evaluate it and tell you if you need to see a doc or if they can treat it. They will use electrical stimulation to help recover/heal faster. There are plenty of techniques they can use to facilitate faster healing. Just call your local PT and ask if you can come in. Your insurance will probably even cover it. Hope this helps. P.B.
