I play basketball and like most want to be able to throw it down with authority. I am 6 ft. tall and I have a verticle of 30 inch but want much more. I can dunk but it isn't the way I want to be able to. If anyone out there can help me with a program that would increase my verticle, will you please help. Also is there anything that i can take to help build the muscles i need for this? thanks!!!! IP: Logged |

You need to do olympic lifts and corresponding assitance lifts, as well as plyometric drills, and last but not least any of the lifts that work the posterior chain (hams, glutes, erectors). Olympic lifters have some of the highest verticals of any atheletes around-- do what they do and you too will be a kangaroo. IP: Logged |

Anabolic Steroids will be of little use to you at your age. Sorry, but thats the truth. Work on your flexibility, Explosiveness with plyometric drills (I've jumped over so many orange cones I feel like a toad) and have someone who knows look at your form. Have yourself video taped doing your best work and have that critiqued. A local university will usually have Phys-ed students that would love to do this. I remember doing the same for one of my Human Performance and Nutrition classes. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Specificity is the name of the game here. I'm not a fan of plyos for bodybuilders, but they do come in handy for a lot of athletes. I'm not so sure about using ankle weights, as there is some evidence that this can actually limit your explosiveness, as it can condition you to a different muscle firing pattern than what is needed for that specific movement (yes, I know that baseball players have traditionally used weighted bats, but I think that's more useful for getting blood flow into the area before an at-bat; I don't see many baseball players doing extensive drills w/ weighted bats, etc.). As far as chemical assistance, heavy androgens can facilitate faster neural firing in skeletal muscle, which can be of some benefit to athletes. Does anyone really think Mark McGwire improved his slugging power w/androstene? Try test or, better yet, Fina along w/ a pure androgen, eg, Halo or Masteron/Permastril, if you want to go this route IP: Logged |
