Deadlifts should not even be up for comparison to squats. Squats are highly concentrated on certain areas of the legs. Deadlifts are involved with all kinds of different muscles (depending on technique). I would consider deadlifts more of a competitive lift, rather than a conditioning lift. ((Personally)) Deadlifts are also a lot "harsher" on the lower back than squats are. So I usually stay away from them. IP: Logged |

Deadlifts can make you thick as hell, but they are no replacement for squats! I do deadlifts on back days. They will thicken the hell out of it too. I use a traditional stance feet about shoulder width apart, and grip slightly wider then that. Make sure you push "through the floor" with the heels of your feet, and you shouldnt strain your lower back to much. But it does work your lower back so dont worry about a little strain. Start light, with high reps to condition your back, you'll be sore the next day. Try 3 or 4 sets of 12-15 reps. After a couple weeks start going heavier and lower the reps. IP: Logged |

why do you always keep saying that the best way to not fuck your low back is not to train it BS!!! BIG, deads are harsh on back cus they train them. If you slowly build up weight, good form, youll get a lowback which will be dificult to injure!!!! The DL and the siff leg vesrsion, I love both, by doing SLDL you also train your hams. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Bro, The deadlift is a wonderful exercise. I love it. I am about an inch taller than you - you should grip the bar with your hands inside of your feet (some people call this "sumo" deadlift). Use an alternate hand grip - one palm facing you, one palm facing away. Remember to switch each set. When you grip the bar, you should feel it against your legs so that if you let go, you would fall over. I deadlift and squat. One doesn't really "replace" the other. Deadlifts made me bigger though, for sure. It incorporates so many muscles that you have no choice but to grow. As far as a program, try a weight where you can do 6 sets of 6. Form is more important than a big weight. Most of the effort is in your glutes and legs, you should feel your lower back being used but it shouldn't be doing most of the work. Any questions email me. Like the guys said befor Deads are no relacement for Squats and should always be done on different days. I used to be a Pro Powerlifter and I always counted on Deads to make me stronger and thicker. Try the Sumo style with your hands in close and feet as far apart as you can while still being comfortable for a while then try the traditional with your feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart. I normally do five sets of five with two warmups of 12. If you can stick to the deads it will make you thick as hell and GROW, GROW, GROW. Good Luck. STAY STRONG! IP: Logged |

I would actually disagree with some of the previous posts and suggest you begin with a "regular" deadlift, as opposed to "sumo" style. Your height is not a problem, but very short arms would be, which I doubt you have. Furthermore the only reason to stagger the grip is to compensate for a fatigued or weak grip. Not to mention, when you learn to take a "clean" grip the progression into all the Olympic moves (and their corresponding assistance lifts) is much smoother. Basically your setting yourself up for more athletic carry over (I don't know if thats important to you?). And finally a regular position will work both the legs and back through a wider range of motion, thus: more hypertrophy. Socrates says love the Pig Iron IP: Logged |

I'm 6'2' and dead's are hard and tough, but they really hit the low back, traps, lats and the legs.Just remember to drive with your hips and pull with your back. The toughest part is the first 4 inchs after that it's yours.Hands outside your legs, head up,butt down and back FLAT.Your initial drive do not raise your ass or it will be all back.As much as I hate the magazine Muscle & Fitness there is a good article on dead's in the March 2000 issue. If you want great width and a sweep to your quads and hams try doing deadlifts right before squats then do a concentration movement like extensions IP: Logged |
