I've been lucky with my rotator cuff... I was told by a friend who knew what he was doing at an early stage to start working it and have never had problems. But I don't know the reasoning behind it. I've heard of cuff getting torn from football injuries or from people in car accidents... Why does the cuff get torn from benching? Is it lifting the bar off the rack and if so, then why doesn't that exercise it enough? I mean nobody adds 50 lbs to their bench from one workout to the next so why wouldn't your cuff grow along with your chest and tris?

Your rotator cuff is a supportive muscle, it's not directly stressed when benching. I'ts used to help to support and keep your arms from moving around, there is a lot of stress placed on your rotator cuff during benching, and especially military press. The stresses are normally applied at strange angles, especially when your form moves off a bit, if you're straining on a heavy lift, that's when you get hurt.

Your rotator cuff isn't meant to be a big strong muscle, actually making it to large can hinder movement of the arm. When i had my sugury the surgeon told me that i had made my rotator cuff much to large, he had to remove some of it, to perform the shoulder repair.
