Everytime I work shoulders I get a catch in my shoulders and it literally pops out loud where my workout partners can actually hear it. It only happens when I work shoulders. It is not that painful but it does hurt. Once the set is complete the pain subsides, it doesnt matter if I go light or heavy it still happens. My shoulder does not hurt any other time. Do you bros have any input to what is going on with my shoulder?

It sounds as though you're experiencing a rotator problem. Be really careful and try some different techniques that will favor the support in this region. Does it pop or crack when you roll your elbow in circles?

Try shoulder routines that focus more on intensity and not over extension. Shoulder shrugs with barbel and you can use the smith machine as well. Find a grip that will work intensity and allow you the motion without over-extending the shoulder or hyperextending as well. If your using DB fly's, bend the elbows but don't come up higher than your shoulders... arms should come straight out from shoulder not above. These are a few that should give you some ideas to follow. Hope this helps and I'll give ya some more later if ya want.

There is a company in Denver that makes the "Shoulder Horn" which helps you to do strict form rotator cuff exercises. I had really bad rotator cuff problems, from benching too heavy combined with not working back and rear delts hard enough, which using this device helped me to get rid of. You can do most of the exercises without it but it really does help with form which is very important with rotator cuff work.

PEACE

Does it sound like I may need surgery, and if so how long will i be sidelined?

Try the shoulder horn as mac says and the advice earlier. I would also talk to your doc if it's that bad. You don't wanna mess with shit on your own if it's giving you that much of a prob. Do you have med coverage?

LET ME KNOW YOUR SHOULDER ROUTINE SETS,REPS AND EXCERSIZES.ALOT OF TIMES THIS COULD BE A SIGN OF OVERTRAINING AND THE SHOULDER JOINT IS EASILY OVERTRAINED. IF YOU PUT YOUR ARM STRAIGHT OUT INFRONT DOES IT POP,THEN BRING IT TO THE SIDE STILL HOLDING IT UP DOES IT POP IF IT DOES YOU CAN DO THESE THINGS I FOUND HELPFUL.TRAIN FOUR DAYS A WEEK EACH BP ONCE A WEEK,DO THREE EXCERSIZES PER BP ALSO AFTER FIRST EXC. KEEP WARM UP TO ONE SET YOU SHOULD BE WARM AFTER THE FIRST ONE THEN DO TWO SETS ALL OUT.NOW HERE IS A VERY IMPORTANT POINT THAT SOME PEOPLE MISS,IS TO CHANGE YOUR EXCERSIZES EVERY3 WEEKS NOT REPS OR SETS JUST EXCERSIZES THIS GIVES YOUR JOINTS A BREAK AND KEEPS YOU ABLE TO GET STRONGER WITHOUT BURNING OUT.THS IS A LOUIE SIMMIONS TECH. AND BELIEVE ME IT WORKS.LET ME KNOW IF I CAN HELP MORE

I usually start with overhead dumbell presses 3 sets of 8 - 10 reps then 3 sets of shrugs 10 - 12 reps and then front laterall raises 3 sets and side raises 3 sets and then 3 sets for the rear delts. I do this once a week for my shoulders.

Sounds like you might have a rotator cuff problem. I would lay off the regular shoulder work completely and just do rotator cuff work for a few weeks. Do a search and you will find some stuff on the net about specific rotator exercises. Try www.t-mag.com they had a few articles about it. Why chance doing serious damage that could keep you from doing upper body for several weeks?

IN your shoulder routine you state that you do shrugs. Many people that I see,do these incorectly, are you rolling your shoulders from front to back? If so stop! raise it straight up and down, not backwards. Also,if you are doing benchs stop. BNP stop! BNpulldowns STOP. Good luck.
