The other day when I showed up at the gym for my arm workout, there was this old man (about 60-65) who immediately started giving me advice on my workout. It kinda pissed me off, but I just took it with a grain of salt and kept on with what I was doing. The guy had a body like a keg of beer- huge chest and gut that stuck out about the same distance! I figured he was there for some light cardio excersizes, but no shit did he load up the squat bar with 1035 lbs. and crank out 14 reps. Reminded me of the old strongman competitors.
Taught me a great lesson...you sure can't tell much about a persons strength at the gym by initial impressions!!

It was on the hack squat machine and 11-45lb. plates each side. Just surprising that an old bastard like that could squat up there with Ronnie Coleman.

I've done 900 for 25 on the hack machine (the one with the yoke that sticks out and you can use backwards). Honestly it felt like I was squatting only about 295.

I am convinced that the manufacturers purposely design the leverage on these plateloader machines so that you have to throw on 3 times the weight you would use on a free-weight equivalent...This makes people feel good about themselves and they keep on using the equipment.

excuse me for ranting...this is just a pet peeve of mine. I spend more energy loading the damn plates on than actually doing the lift.
