Cortisol, good or bad hormone? by Bruce J. Ketchum You've just finished up a day's work and it is time to head home. Instead of using the car or taking public transit, you decide to bike or perhaps run home to get in some extra needed miles. In a matter of minutes - from your desk, through the change room and out onto the road - your body goes from a quiet, resting state to a demanding, active state. It is this change of gears that elicits a complex array of energy-yielding biochemical actions in the body; allowing you to use more of your musculature, more forcefully, for a longer period of time. In particular, the steroid hormone cortisol plays a prominent but often misunderstood role in supplying needed energy to the active muscles during exercise. 1. cortisol is great. My Dr just shot some right into a bulging disk. Hopefully the swelling will go down and I wont have to get surgery. If only i could stop puking and get rid of this headache. ------------------

I just had the most stressful day yesterday because I got in a bad car accident. I didn't get hurt except for a sore shoulder.I went to the gym that night and had the worst workout and fealt the smallest iv'e been in months. The only reason I can think of is my bodyy realeasing cortisol. Me crashing this car adds alot of stress to me and couldn't happen at a worst time. Could this be possible that the stress had this significant of an effect on my body? Just curious. ---PEACE---Mad Max

So getting really stressed out can release it??? I get anxiety attacks sometimes. I wonder if that would trigger it?? ------------------

I often take DHEA before exercise as a cortisol antagonist. I was thinking of adding low doses of cytadren as well. Maybe the moral of this story is that cortisol is good for carido vascular fat burning activities, and not good for body building activities. So from now on DHEA and cytadren before weights but not before cardio. Did I understand the information correctly?

Charles Poliquin stated that 800mg of Phosphatidlyserine taken right after a workout will help to reduce cortisol levels after exercise. I am also aware that Branch Chain aminos will, in heavy doasage (40g all thoughout your workout) will reduce cortisol levels. I have never used cytadren, but have only heard negative things about it. If you use it, please be very careful. Your body does need some cortisol. ------------------

curious george. Would 100mg of cytadren before workouts be low enough to be safe? Or is this too low to be effective?

In three days I will post why cortisol antagonists such as RU-486 and Cytadren are not exactly good for your joints/tissues. Good post Iron Game. Special mention will have to go to the fact that GH modifies a cells reponse to cortisol. Making it more sensitive in the case of fat cells, and more resistant in the case of muscle cells. Godspeed |
