First of all if you want to gain mass your going to have to sacrifice some of that hard appearance and cuts...It just does not work that way. In the calorie surplus needed for gains in body mass you will hold additional water and wont have the ability to loose fat. Trying to stay lean and bulk is why most never get big. You're chasing conflicting goals. They will cancel each other out and you won't go either way...either cut or bulked. Only you can determine the calorie requirement for your self. A good starting point would probably be 4000 cals a day.

A good starting point would probably be 4000 cals a day. 300g protein=1200 calories It's only a rough outline as many factors will determine your calorie needs. Metabolism, training, and lifestyle all play important roles in determining your energy requirements. The one thing that is uniform for all humans is the fact that you MUST consume more calories than your body uses in order to gain body mass. Hopefully your training will dictate that that body mass is muscle mass.

quote: that's an unrealistic fat goal for that amount of calories....he'll be getting about 120-200 fat grams with a typical bulking diet.....anything less than 100 grams a day is a cutting cycle for most people who eat >4000 cals a day 100 grams fat = 900 calories 900/4000 = about 22-23% fat in the diet 100 grams of fat is not hard to get when you're eating lots of food

I have no problems getting that amount of fat without going over it. Typical bulking diet doesn't have to include 120 grams of fat just because it's bulking. Clean foods and carefull planning and you can get the optimal amount of every macro-nutrient. He may need more fat, but there's no need to load up on grease and lard just for the sake of bulking.
