According to THE WALL STREET JOURNAL in an article published 6/13/99 Genentech Inc. said a new form of human-growth hormone requiring monthly or biweekly shots proved as effective as the current once-a-day version in a test of children who lack the hormone. The biotechnology company announced the results at a medical conference Sunday and plans to seek regulatory approval shortly. If approved, the drug's added convenience could boost Genentech's share of the market for growth hormone, its top-selling product last year, where it faces stiff competition from Eli Lilly & Co. and others. The six-month trial involved 74 children who got equal doses in shots either once or twice a month. The children, all of them growth-hormone deficient, grew at an average annual rate of 3.3 inches, which is comparable to the rate seen with daily therapy, Genentech said. About 20,000 children in the U.S. suffer from the pituitary disorder that typically results in an adult height of less than five feet. Patients taking daily growth-hormone shots for years can add a foot or more to their final height, but some don't comply or abandon therapy citing the discomfort and hassle. "The convenience and potential for good compliance with an effective drug is going to be a real positive for a lot of children and their families," said Edward Reiter, head of pediatrics at Baystate Medical Center Children's Hospital in Springfield, Mass.Dr. Reiter, the principal investigator, said he personally received no compensation for conducting the study. Genentech, of South San Francisco, Calif., will market its sustained-release version under the trade name Nutropin Depot. Alkermes Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., which manufactures the drug by wrapping it in tiny spheres that slowly degrade in the body, will receive royalties, which weren't disclosed, from Genentech.Synthetic growth hormone, first sold in 1985, has stirred controversy because it is often prescribed for short-stature children who produce sufficient amounts of the hormone even though it isn't approved for this use. Doctors are entitled to prescribe drugs for so-called off-label uses. Still, growth hormone has less effect on such children, adding an average of two inches in half of patients treated for years, according to a New England Journal of Medicine study in February.
The long-acting form of the drug could be available by the middle of next year. The recommended dosing schedule has yet to be determined.
