It's very difficult for me not to grimace and tighten my neck when I'm doing these. My neck is sore as hell today. Would it help to tuck your chin into your chest? Any thoughts?

I always tuck my chin. I also believe in doing traps very heavy. I once pulled a neck/back muscle. It hurt for a week. I mean it hurt. The only thing that can help is rest, rest, and ice.

I did the same thing once and it hurt like hell. Don't move your head and neck around when doing shrugs and you'll be ok.

I did that before. I couldn't move my neck at all. I had to got to the Doc to get some pain meds.

I was doing seated cable rows. I wasn't as focused on form, I was talking to a buddy.

It's been three days now, but the soreness is subsiding. Thanks for the replies brothers.

tucking the chin in, can result in an unusual head tilt. giving u the appearance of "slouched shoulders" i.e., bad posture and bad overall appearance.

I have done this a few times also, I don't know if tucking the chin helps, you just got to be real careful if you're doing heavy shrugs that you're not trying to squeeze out an extra rep using your neck, I know exactly when I do it, I know my necks gonna hurt like hell tonight
