Before my pec tear, I was hitting 405 for 3 sets of 5 and damn near it, never piled the weight on to see and unfortunately never will again. . .I am happy just doing slow, clean reps with 315.

Went for 495 awhile back and no go. Amazing how 10lbs feels like a ton at this weight.

hit up to like 450 once when I injected a ton of prop in me the day before. never done it since.
Maybe next cycle though, I can still get over 400 though. I'm not to worried about the weight I bench anymore. I mena I do wish to be strong, but I'm more worried about developing the muscle.

I can do 250lbs 2 times....hehehehehe

I never lift heavy anymore after screwing up my shoulder. Now, it is lighter weight with slow, controlled movements....

Still, with I could throw up 500...seen a few guys do it, just not me.

A max is an ego thing, at the heavy weights in hurts your joints so bad that it screws up your workouts for a week. I have maxed 415 at 6'5, and tall guys always whine about the "I have long arms... " bullshit. Fact is, pound it or go home to your mama. Truth is, I have got my best growth from a full range of motion for 8-10 reps until it burns like crazy, and then forced reps.

I would like to object to the 'max is for egos' line of comments.

I competed in Powerlifting pretty seriously from 1993 - 1998.

I achieved the following benches:

573 at 308 lbs
580 at 275 lbs
560 at 235 lbs (near miss with 585)

I won't even tell you guys how many times I tried and missed 600 in meets

Now... I am not really competing anymore... just interested in getting huge while staying lean and very strong, but I still find value in heavy singles.

By doing heavy singles properly (including on your heavier warmups), you get the following:

ability to concentrate fully on form and explosion

confidence in handling heavy weights

immediate stimulation and adaptation of the CNS to heavier loads

How does this help you grow you ask?

Well, if all you did was bench singles (as many of the top powerlifters now do), you wont see a whole lot of hypertrophy. Most accomplished powerlifters don't care. They are already big enough.

However, try completing a nice heavy single then go down and take some reps. Do you notice how much lighter they feel? You have conditioned your CNS to handle weights and can take advantage of this throughout the rest of the workout. Do you notice how the weights feel lighter and smoother than they did on your warmups?

You know... being in the powerlifting game a long while, do you know where I see most of the pec-tears came from? Handling heavy weights for reps on the top sets and heavy drop sets. I seriously haven't heard of too many tears on the max single set itself. Honestly! Personally, I have had numerous pulls over the years and most came on rep sets. One theory has been put forth on this which I buy into: when you are repping, your form gets sloppier on each rep due to breathing, ancillary muscles fatiguing, etc, etc. Also blood supply to tendons is less than to muscles. Heavy reps may actually be more detrimental to tendons than to the muscles themselves.

Anyway... enough rambling.... I believe a nice conjunction of reps/weights and variation is the key to good growth and keeping from becoming stagnant.

Peace,
SquatLord2k
