Fail to wrap your thumbs around the bar in opposition to you fingers? This is a dangerous practice...by the way. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That would be me. I hate the feel of grabing the bar so that the weight is in the pocket of soft skin between the thumb & index finger. I can actually lift more using the thick pad of meat that pops up when you put your thumb beside your index finger. Different strokes for different folks. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

i have a friend who had 345lbs on and he didnt have his fingers wrapped around the bar. well guess what? he dropped it on his neck, lol everyone in the gym just watched him, didnt do shit about it.. fucked up huh? he grabbed the bar and pulled it of his neck and set it in place. now, name one person that can do that from their NECK! ![]() -MIKE- p.s. i always wrap my thumbs around the bar every since i seen that happen! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

It could slip out? I don't think so. even the lightest bench (135?) is not gonna defy the laws of physics & gravity and leap off of your palms. Lets say it did....would you want you thumbs ripped out of their socket trying to stop it? I'll pass. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Damn, I never thought of that but that's a very good point. Thumbs around bar for me from now on. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I always wrap my thumbs around the bar. I feel a lot stronger and safer that way. BTW, Arnold and Franco used to bench the other way with the sides of their thumbs squeezed against their index fingers. ------------------ [This message has been edited by JuanDeLaCruz (edited February 12, 2001).] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I always rap my thumb around the bar. It just feels natural. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

No wrap here. Your thumbs will not help control the bar if you loose it anyway. BPP ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

i'm a wrapper.....feels more comfortable..plus if you pick your nose, you can still play with it that way ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]()

its not about the control, is about the bar slipping, if you dont have a nice grip the shit can break your ribs if it falls. ![]() ![]() ![]()

No reason to wrap the thumb, do you think your thumbs can support the amount of weight you bench should it slip? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I think a non-wrap is much more mechanicaly stronger. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

The only intelligent argument I have seen for wrapping your thumb around the bar is that when you wrap your thumb around the bar, your wrist is in a more stable position and less prone to injury. When you do not wrap your thumb, your wrists tend to lay back more and put more stress on the wrist joint. I interchange these two grips according to what feels good on any given day, but generally I wrap my thumbs since I have broken my wrists in the past and they are stiff and painful. giantset ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Had a friend that did this type of practice on bench. When he went to rack the weight he accidentally hit the top of the rack and it came out of his hand. It began to slip a little and he couldn't get a grip back on it...till it popped out of his hand and luckily it only hit his chest. Lots of bruises. I can't do flat bench with this practice...I bench with a 2" bar. Very difficult to bench that way. B True ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

in powerlifting we call this a suicide grip, I've seen a lot of people drop the bar on their chest this way. Some people will lift more weight this way because it forces you to tuck your elbows in instead of having them flare out to the side. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I always use a false grip. especially when going heavy as wrapping my thumb hurts my wrists. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

maybe you can lift more without wrapping, but just the thought of the bar falling and breaking my neck gives me creeps. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I have never wrapped my thumb in 13 years. Hold your hand in front of you and place the other as if it was the bar in both positions. With the thumb wrapped it lies further up the hand, causing more stress on the wrists. With out it wrapped it is in alignment with the wrist. I have never seen any body drop a bar on themselves, except when their chest has given in but their hands still are in contact. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

thumbs wrapped might give a sense of security, but its true, your thumbs alone cannot support the weight you are benching alone. i personally dont wrap my thumbs. i heard somewhere it helps for a stronger bench. shrug. maybe thats a myth too. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

the thumb is the weakest part of the hand!! it ain't gonna stop 300+lbs from slippin. if the bar slips you've done something wrong, like moving you elbows to get more leverage from you're tri's. i've tried a closed grip and can't even get my set started, feels like shit. to each their own, if it fells good and enables you to lift more be like nike and just do it!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

You people act like the thumb is the only thing lifting the weight, rather than your hand working as a whole to hold it, and your arms and pecs lifting it. I wrap my thumbs and the thumb IS strong enough to keep it stable and prevent it from rolling out of your grip. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Well I personaly think it's all about preferance. I never did nor will I ever do it. I prefer to not to wrap, just compfort that's all. I never seen any one loose the weight like people have mentioned above. Nor Have I. And the weight thrown around isn't chump weight either. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
