They're a staple in my shoulder/delt workout. The closer the grip, the more it hits the traps. The wider the grip, the focus shifts towards the delts. This exercise frys my entire shoulder gurdle.

rows are a great overall upper body builder, they hit the tris, delts, traps, and back. get someone at the gym to show you correct form and practice with light weight the first time then build up. Youll really feel the burn

they hit the tris cos of the support of the bar, still, that dosent do much shit on the tris, so they are not considered "worked" after doing uprights.

upright rows good for
1) posterior delts
2) traps

I dropped them for heavy shrugs only as far as hitting traps. Upright rows have screwed up more than a few rotator cuffs, it's not worth it.

I got in a pretty bad car wreck about 3 years ago and ripped every muscle in my right rotator cuff. Now, things like upright rows and behind the neck presses are a thing of the past because of the added stress on the cuff.

I like high pulls better, another no-no for those with bad rotator cuffs though. I have torn my rotators twice, and after tons of rest, and much rotator work, I can do uprights, high pulls whatever. Had bad knees from soccer, and with anough stretching and perfect form I can squat too. May not work for all, but rehab can bring back some exercises, amy take a while.

Uprights destroyed my shoulders...Heavy shrugs using a cambered bench bar centers the gravity and has less strain on the lower back...awesome trap exercise

UPRIGHTS ARE GREAT AFTER SIDE LADERALS. I LIKE TO DO SHRUGS AFTER MY ROWS:

HAMMER STRENGTH MILITARY PRESS
SUPERSET SIDE AND FRONT RAISES
DUMBELL PRESS
UPRIGHT ROWS
SHRUGS
THATS MY SHOULDER WORKOUT. BOY DOES IT DO WONDERS!!!!

I don't do them because it messes up my powerclean form (gets me in the habit of bent-arm pulling).
