I have been having major problems in strenght imbalances. When using dumbells for bench press my right ad can usually do atleast 3 or more, more reps than my left and thats if I really push my left side as hard as possible. Barbell is jut awkward cause the bar is being oushed muc more by my rigt than left. Tis confuses me. There is a slight difference in size but nothing close to the difference in strength. I am now trying to do 1-2 extra sets wit my left arm to even tings out but nothing seems to be helping and this is killing my chest workouts. Any ideas?

Just make sure to stop at the same time with both sides, even if your right can do a few more, I kind of have the same problem. This should allow your left to become stronger while your right will stay the same or become slightly weaker, eventually evening out.

Thats what I have been doing anyway or I have been getting a spot and forcing the reps on the left side.

Hey bro, Did you ever do any nerve damage to the side that is weaker? When was the last time you went to the chiropracter? The reason i ask is because i used to get stingers in football and i had some nerve damage on the right side of my body. Well when i went back into the wieghtroom to prepare for the next season, my right side was extremely weaker than my left. I am righthanded so this was definetly not expected. Nerve damage can make the muscles weaker. Let us know and keep me posted on what happens. Good Luck

Actually no, the stronger side was injured before though. I had shoulder repair sugery on the stronger side about 16 months ago

I heard the SOLOFLEX machine works good on imbalances! the bar twists making the weaker arm work harder! its like 2000 bucks for the damn machines. the weights are made of rubber . lol but yea... do cables with a straight bar.. that should give the same effect ------------------

try pre-exhausting your smaller pec, so that by the end of your set the amount of burn is equal. i do this on my bench days cause my right tri is infinitly stronger then my left.

It could be a previous strength imbalance from sports. I was a thrower for a couple years and had the same problem. One of the contributing factors was that my rotator cuff on my strong side was alot stronger while on the week side it was under-developed. The external rotator is an important stabilizer during any pressing movement, so bringing up the strength of the left rotator may help solve your problem. Here is a link to an article which shows how to do/incorperate external rotator work. http://www.testosterone.net/html/52balan.html

Nice article Hugh. Did anyone else notice that test subject and NHL tough guy Jim McKenzie increased his bench press 100 lbs? Poliquin takes credit for this by saying all he did was strengthen his rotators. But McKenzie also gained 15lbs of LBM while reducing his bodyfat by 7.5%. Hmmmmm....I wonder if....nah.

Thanks for the help I will read the article when I get a chance. Its wierd there is little of no size difference just strenght and that one is big. On the pre-exhaust tat would be rediculous because then the stronger side whould want to do like 6-7 while the pre-exhausted week side would onlt wanna do like 2. Maybee you meant pre-exhaust the stronger side? Couldnt that extra work cause the imbalance to get worse or maybee make the right side look bigger which it does not so far?

They don't test for steroids in the NHL. The fact that there is no visable size difference points again to the rotator, as having an underdeveloped left rotators would not be physically apparent (the muscle is so small to begin with). |
