Five weeks ago I began working my arms doing nothing but dumbbell curls and triceps extensions. I weighed 153 lbs, 6 ft frame, 35 yrs old. Started using a 15 lb weight for 6 sets of 12 reps and worked up to 25 lb dumbbells. Sorry guys! Heh, a triumph for me! Every single day and nothing else (yeah I know, no full body workout here but I'm experimental, wanted to see what would happen).

After 4 weeks I added full 1 and 1/2 inch to my arms. I was really thrilled since I could literally measure over a quarter inch growth each week with the tape measure. My weight also went from 153 to 175 by eating lots of chicken, beef, anything protein related. Obviously, most of the weight is fat since the bi's and tri's don't make up very much weight, but I also gained muscle in my shoulders and forearms. It was really muscle since my arms are still very cut. Measures 15 1/2 inches, cold!

So I thought I would begin training the rest of my body and I started with squats. Man, oh, man! My skinny legs! The first day, I did 3 sets of squatting (15 reps) with NO weights and then 1 set of 15 reps with a 40 lb barbell. Geez!!! I laid on the floor for 30 minutes. My quads hurt so bad I couldn't get off the floor. I then did quads a few more days but improved very rapidly after 1 week to be able to do 3 sets with 40 lbs. That was a little over a week ago.

But here's the weird part. Immediately after starting this, my arm gains went to zero! My weight gain has frozen at 175. My appetite went out the window and I began waking up very early in the mornings. Also, I always wake up with my Schlong standing straight up, chest out, head held high, (know what I mean). But since my squatting and full body workout, my sex drive went to ZERO, along with everything else. In the morning, when I wake up, my Schlong is still taking a snooze. I haven't been like this since pre-puberty! Geez?!? what gives??? Is this what OVER-TRAINING is all about? Man, I'm only a beginner!!!

Sincerly,
Spidey

id say its the 25 lb dumbells. maybe you should drop the weight, stud. j/k!! i hear what your sayin. everytime i do legs i feel like crap for a few days. when i first started doing squats, walking would be incredibly painful for about a week. stomach cramps and very low energy levels also ensued. it got alot better over time, although i still dread leg day. i think once your muscles get used to the exercise your precious shlong will be back to normal. just be sure to stay consistent and your body will adjust.

Make sure to get adequate post-workout nutrition on leg days. When I don't consume enough simple carbs and whey protein after hitting legs, I feel much more burnt out the next day.

God I hope this is a joke but I will say something just in case this is a cry out for help. Forget whatever workout you are doing now since you are obviously overtraining. Start lifting three days a week like this:

Day 1
Flat Bench Press
5 sets of 10-12

Day 2
Rest

Day 3
Dead Lifts
5 sets of 8-10

Day 4
Rest

Day 5
Squats
5 sets of 10-15

Days 6&7
Rest

Start cycle over

Do this with the high reps for 2-3 months and you should see a significant increase in mass assuming you are eating and resting enough. After 2 months or so you can add in ancillary exercises to these three lifts and change the reps but make sure you have mastered the form for the big three first. These big three should be the core of most any bulking routine, especially when you are first starting out. I wouldn't worry about your bis and tris until you master this routine.

Dude,
Am I reading this correctly? You are training your biceps and quads EVERY day? For a beginner, one workout per muscle group every 6-7 days should be plenty. If you are only doing squats and curls you can probably handle once every 4-5 days. If you're consistently losing the urge to procreate, you are overtraining. Work out harder but less often. Don't worry about the weight you are using. After 6 sets of 12, 25lbs isn't that bad. If you can do this, you can probably do 3 sets of 6 with 45lbs which doesn't sound as bad. Also, did you really think you would gain 1/4" per week on your biceps forever? Do the math...you would be setting records before the end of the year. Train for 3 years and you will be ecstatic with 1/4" per year.

Geez Man!! You guys are rough!!!

I wish this was a joke but yeah, you're right I'm a weenie. But everyone is a weenie at some time in their bodybuilding journey. But hey, get a load of this. If I come from 6 ft, 153lbs all the way to 230 after, 20 inch arms after 12 months, wouldn't it be the greatest ascent of all time?!?

Just need to rest though to get my T-Levels back to normal. Then drop the squats and see if I can keep the arm growth at 1/4 in per week for 8 more weeks. Then go back to the full body work out and just maintain my arms.

Thanks for the responses though. Even though you dudes got a good laugh out of me, I must say some of your replies gave me a good chuckle!!

go back to just working your arms for 8 weeks to see if you can maintain it? Dude.. working your arms everyday is not going to make them grow.. You are going to be constantly tearing the muscle fiber in your arms. Muscles do not grow whenever you are working them, they tear down. They grow whenever you let them rest. Its retarded to work ANY bodypart everyday! That size you gained on your arms was probably just the inflamation of the muscle because you worked them so damn much.. probably wasn't actual muscle. Muscle doesn't grow THAT fast.

Getting a proper training program going and don't train like a blind man. Sounds like you need a eye seeing dog to help you around in the gym!

Why are you only worried about your arms? Haven't you ever heard of the word symmetry? You will look really stupid with 20inch arms and 15inch legs. How can you cut squats out when they are one of the best overall mass builders. My advice to you would be to read up on some SENSIBLEtraining. Training each bodypart once a week is suffice for a natural trainer...

Guys, I swear to you!! I put on 1 1/2 inches in only 4 weeks.

Man, it's not inflammation, good grief!!! There were some days when the growth would just explode on the tape measure. I was doing something right or this would happen. Maybe I am fucked up but I got to get back into this mode cause it was working! Maybe after I get my arms up a couple of inches more I can switch to another single bodypart. Man, the facts don't lie. I saw it with my own eyes and I couldn't believe what was happening!!

Some of this is repeat, but here is my 2 cents:

FIRST 4-6 MONTHS

day 1 - back

3 sets cable rows, 10 reps
3 sets pull ups or lat pulls, 10 reps

day 2 - triceps

3 sets dips or dip machine, 10 reps
2 sets french press or cable ext., 10 reps

day 3 - shoulders

3 sets millitary (NEVER BEHIND NECK), 10 reps
2 sets flys, 10 reps

day 4 - rest

day 5 - biceps

3 sets seated dumbell, 10 reps
2 sets barbell or preacher, 10 reps

day 6 - chest

3 sets flat bench, 10 reps
3 sets incline bench, 10 reps
2 sets dips or dip machine, 10 reps

day 7 - legs

3 sets leg press, 10 reps
2 sets hack squats, 10 reps
3 sets calf raises or donkeys, 15 reps

day 8 - rest

day 9 - start over

Don't do reps to failure until you've been lifting 4 - 6 months. Don't do squats or dealifts until you know the limitations of your lumbar (low-back); you need to baby your lumbar until your tendons strengthen up or you could strain it and have permanent damage. Don't do press-behind-the-necks; bringing the bar down to your chest works just fine and you won't get injured. Eat 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight minimum, along with 3000 to 4000 calories a day of fat and complex carbs (few simple sugars like glucose, fructose, lactose, maltose, etc. - starches are best) like potatos, pastas, and whole grain rather than wheat or white breads. And wait a few months, for God sakes, before you take any anabolics. A muscle tear, torn tendon, or torn ligament will knock you out of the gym for quite awhile. When you finally decide to take the plunge, read up and stay away from testosterone, d-bol, and anadrol-50. Get a personal trainer - a cute one with nice tits and no ring. Good luck.
