i do, and i hate it everyday.
you can buy a strap for it, called a patella knee strap made by McDavid..................
seem to help me alot when i play basketball, butive never tried it doing squats. surgery would be your best choice, if you have insurance, it should cover it. mine does anyway. i will be going under the knife after this basketball season ends to have it repaired.

I have this. The condition is called chondromaltia (sp.?).

Those straps are great. Ace makes some good ones too. Many drugstores and sporting goods stores have them. You'd be surprised what a differnce they make. They make your kneecap move on track, or something like that.

I don't squat any more for a variety of reasons, but when doing leg press and hack squat, my kness hurt 90% less when I wear the straps, and you can even wear them throughout the day to help the inflamation.

I have had that injury for years and there really isn't anything you can do about it in most cases except rest until it cools down a bit and then start back real slowly but there is a good chance once you go heavy it will come back. If in fact yours is tendonitis and not some other compication(an MRI can confirm)then I would not recommend surgery. My doc is one of the best in the country with knees and he said the outcomes for that surgery is very poor and having to go into the knee causes disruption that just results in more complications.

Had surgery a fear and a half ago for torn meniscus and have never been the same. Still hurts like a bitch when doing a squats. Doc messed up and tried to convince me I would be 100%. Also knocked out my passion for inline speedskating. Anyone that doesn't have a bad knee should cherish that.

The patella tendon as in the one that connects your quads over your kneecap (the patella) and to the shin?
I've had problems where it has been tearing away at the spot where it attaches to the shin. It is increadibly painfl, but highly unlikely to completely tear away all at once (so the doc says) - but the pain comes from scar tissue and calcification hitting nerves. Then as the scar tissue and calcification grows, you tend to get tendonitis from it as well.
When I had it very badly it was when I was running a lot and it eventually went away once I stopped.

the doc says that it comes about from several things:
1) many kids get it during growth spurts b/c the muscles and bnoes gorw faster than the tendon and it can't catch up, the tightness then results in the tear
2) same thing, but if you are just imbalanced (you do lots of squats, but neglect your hams)
3) in squats and or lunges, if you knee goes out past your toes, it puts stress on that exact spot. some people never have problems with it... some do.

the strap they give you places a new pressure point on the tendon so that there is less stress at the tear - but it is not a cure, it is just a quick fix - the problem will still remain and get worse, even with the band (although for me it cut the pain by at least half).

so the only real way for it to heal is to rest and it takes some time since tendons are retardedly slow (although AS will help a bit) at growing/healing. then also make sure that your muscle growth is balanced (there are proper rations you should maintain - if you can do X amount on the quads, then the hams should be able to do Y amount - I've heard different opinions as to what the ratios are - but mainly just be aware not to neglect one nor the other)

The Downside Of Being Better Than Everyone Else Is That People Tend To Assume You're Pretentious.

Happy Scrappy, how old are you as if your problem is related to a growth spurt(as your doc suggested) then it is termed Osgood Sclatters Disease and you will outgrow it. You will know if you have this as there will be a protuberence on your tibial tubercle that stands out(about 1.5 inches below the bottom of your patella). Is your pain in the knee itself or a bit below??

Jugger, It can be several problem that orginate in that area of the knee, not just patella tendonitis. Answer some questons for me and I can help.
1)Describe to me the type of pain you are having....burning, stabbing, etc.

2) Pin point the most painfull spot with one finger and descibe where it is anatomically.

3) Are there any other exercises, movements(going down stairs) that affect the knee.

4) Do you remember a certain incidence that you ever hurt the knee before? If so, what was the duration of pain and the treatment?

5) Do you have any poping or cracking noises from the knee that you can reproduce?

6) Do you have enough quad flexibility to touch you foot to your but in a quad stretch? Does this cause pain? Also, if you can touch your but with your foot, can you stay standing straight up and draw the leg further back past the midline of the body?

Do you best to answer these and I will get you back painfree.

hey maximo, you're a prick. Okay maybe 315 isn't heavy to you tough guy. When someone says they are training heavy the word "heavy" is relative meaning a weight that a person can do few reps with as oppesed to light which means a weight that one can do many reps with. You sound like one of those dumbasses that stacks 550 lbs on their back and then squats down 1/4 inch and brags about how much they can lift. Get off of this board if you're going to be a prick!!

If you use knee wraps make sure you do not wrap over the patella as this wil cause further pressure on it. You should wrap them in a diamond pattern around it to give support. Most good neoprene supports have a hole in the knee for this same reason. I have seen so many guys just wrap over the top of them thinking this is helping.

Anyways guys thanks for the replies. I also have had 3 surgeries on my lateral miniscus (2 scopes and 1 reconstruction). I think I may have to pick up one of those straps. What do you guys think about 3 months on GH, think it may help? Thanks again

Happy Scrappy I agree w/ you. I had a patella-femur injury also. Everything I did hurt my knees. I tried doing squats and I hurt like a bitch. The ONLY thing that really worked was Hamstring curls. I guess it was an imbalance thing because once I got my hammies to get stronger my pain suddenly went away. I also did leg extenstions w/ my toes pointing straight out(flexing my calves) and working lifting only the last 30 degrees. If you go down too low it could put unnecessary pressure on your knees. It works the inner muscle of your quads which also might be weak and might be the cause of the problem as well.
So I suggest just trying out leg curls and leg extentions and trying to form a balance of strength in your legs. Good Luck!
