I hate to piss into the wind here but I'm going to say something shocking.... YOU DON'T NEED TO ALCOHOL SWAB YOUR INJECTION SITE! If you are using sterile pins (which I hope to heck all of you are) it is totally unecessary to engage in this activity. The only reason why this is done now during common injection procedures is to put the patient's mind at ease. ------------------     | ||

Have you ever heard of cross contamination? Lets say I have an apple. I take a shit, do not wash my hands, and I give you the apple. Now you take a knife, and cut the apple in half. Your only going to eat the insides, but the knife touches the skin(which proberly as bacteria on it from my hands) then slices through the apple. Then you eat the inside of the apple. Which would be contaminated... | ||

Why would you touch the actual needle with your hand anyways? My only point was...relax everyone, you're not going to get an infection if you just handle your pins carefully. ------------------ | ||

I wasnt' talking about the needle, but if the needle is clean and your ass isnt' clean(from sweat, dirt, ect...) then what good are you doing? I just think its always safe to have a clean needle, and a clean injection spot. Just my opinion, no hard feelings. | ||

Must have missed that one in stick lab. LOL Doesn't really matter with the thousands of inj's I've done, it hasn't made a damn bit of difference if I have or not. So in this case, speaking from experience and not from hard core documentation, I would have to concur with Doc J on this one. ------------------ | ||

Agree with bs. Sterilize injection site. Even getting out of the shower I clean with alcohol. No reason not to. I always use new,sterile needles but why risk infection for so little hassle? My 2 cents. ghans | ||

You're right, it's not that much of a hassle. If swabbing puts your mind at ease, do it. There are just a lot of medical myths out there that I find interesting and this one pertained to our "hobby" so I thought I would share. ------------------ | ||

Actually Dan Duchaine said the same thing in his underground handbook. He stated that the alcohol on the swab didn't stay on the skin long enough to clean/sterilize... ------------------ | ||

I HAD AN ABCESS, AND ONCE YOU GO THRU WHAT I HAVE YOU WILL ALWAYS SWAB WITH ALCOHOL!!!!! I EVEN CLEAN THE TOPS OF MY BOTTLES AFTER I DRAW OUT......PARANOID YAH, BUT FUCK I HAVE TWO HUGE SCARS ON MY ASS FROM A NASTY ABCESS!!!!! | ||

i agree... after 15 years of being diabetic i stopped swabbing with alcohol after the first year. i've had 2-4 injections a DAY in the last 15 yeas and have never gotten an infection from not using alcohol. [This message has been edited by ch0ke (edited February 04, 2001).] | ||

Chance of catching sexual diseases off of someone who is a carrier is not always high. Does this mean that you shouldn't take extra precautions and use a condom? A swab costs how much? If there is only a 0.1% chance of in infecting yourself if not swabbing, would you not swab and be at ease of mind? ------------------ | ||

I agree. Some studies have actually shown that the resident flora prsent on the skin (the body's indigenous bacteria) actually help prevent infection at injection sites.... of course alchohol kills these of as well. ------------------ | ||

DocJ i am with you here. I must confess never to clean the injected side anymore and i took a lot of sticks the last year. Certainly over a 1000. The reason for this: i know a person who needs insulin shots during work and the woman just sticks the needle in right through her clothes into the thigh. If you ask her why she does it like this, she answers i do this since i am 5. I am not saying one shouldn't do it, but i don't. ------------------ Don't look back, life is too short | ||

i just do it right before i get out of the shower. no alcohol or cotton swabs. just a clean injection site and a sterile needle. never had any probs. | ||

Also, interestingly enough many poeple argue that you should`nt use alchohol swabs with an insulin injection as this can affect B/M`s. (Royal Marsden Book of Clinical procedures (Vol 5) I believe). ------------------ | ||

Jeff_rys I think there is a difference between a 30 slin needle and a 22 1 1/2. You would be crazy to put a 22 through your clothing. There are many nasty forms of bacteria that can lye dormant in your skin just waiting to be introduced into your tissue by a syringe. I douse everthing in alcohol, skin, needles, barrels, constantly and in 17 years I never had a single infection or abscess. I would like to think it is because I spend all that time cleaning up and not just dumb luck. But I'll take the luck too. ------------------ | ||

Why throw caution to the wind for something that would take a second to do, and about $3 for a years supply. Do youneed to do it? Maybe not, but I would be pissed if I got an infection as just a freak acident from not be careful. I would be kicking myself every time I tried to sit down (and being reminded of that incredibly PAINFUL lump on my ass!). Either way, no swabs = no protection if there is a chance of infection | ||

Swab if you want to, but you're kidding yourselves if you think it is sterilizing your injection site. It takes approximately 2 minutes of 70% ethanol/isopropanol soaking to kill many bacteria, and alcohol will not have any effect on many other bacterial and fungal spores. DocJ is right.....this is now done mainly for the patients confidence, not for any valid medical reason. | ||

I'll ALWAYS swab b4, period. I think that everybody decides what's best for himself. I always have been someone cautious and that probably tells me to swab b4 injection... Just my 2 cents. DS | ||

I WILL CONTINUE TO SWAB EVERY TIME!!!!!! BUT USING OTHERS LOGIC ON WHY NOT TO SWAB, WHY WASH YOUR HANDS AT ALL, IF ALCOHOL CANNOT KILL THE GERMS THAN WHAT IS WATER AND SOAP ACCOMPLISHING????? KEEP SWABING OR YOU MIGHT END UP WITH A NASTY F#$KIN INFECTION! | ||

As I said before, not all bacteria on your skin is bad and actually protects the body from some rather harmfull organisms. Buy swabbing you are reducing these colonies. I can tell you that even in canulating veins (ie with Venflons) very very few doctors or nurses will use alchohol (certainly in my area) if the individual is reasonably clean. I have also used gear on and off for just shy of 7 years and I have NEVER swabbed and NEVER had a problem ever. The only guy I know that did have a problem was re-using needles (!!). In my opinion alchohol is not that great at killing bacteria anyway (did someone say 2 mins? not as good as iodine or Hexanol). ------------------ | ||

MS was absolutely correct about killing bacteria on the skin's surface. I know all of you supposedly "clean" the injection site. But do you swab the area for 2-3 minutes before an injection?? Because that's how long it takes to kill the bacteria. 2-3 seconds doesn't do a thing. ...bd | ||

I fill my bathtub with a mixture of bleach, hydrochloric acid, and concentrated hydrogen peroxide. I roll around in that for half an hour, and then I take an apricot pit, grind it up, and use the remains to sandblast every inch of my body. then I inject into the corner of my eye where the lysine is most concentrated and plunge away.
