My buddy is not too hot on doing flat bench but can do 90lb dumbells for 10-12 reps on his final set of 5/sets. How much weight would that compare to on a flat bench????

I can do 100's on flat for 5 reps, so maybe I'm close to him. I can do 235 flat for about 5-6 reps.

On a side note I definitely think dumbell bench works the chest better than barbell bench. Safer too.

There is no comparation. It depends on the mechanisms of your body. Im strong as hell with the dbells, not so with the barbell. My friend is exactly the oposite: big barbell press and small dbell press.

Yeah it's definitely different. Maybe because you don't go down all the way or maybe you're just positioning your arms differently I'm not sure but I remember one summer when my dumbell press went up by 10lbs and my bench only went up by one rep. Go figure!

In a bench your arms are locked outwards while doing positive and negative movements. When people use dumbells they tend to push inwards on the positve movement which decreases stress. I do dumbells while mimiking the movement of bench. The weight you use will drop but what a workout. That should give you an accurate comparison. I use 65 but could use 90 b4

there is no comparison. dumbells force you to use stabilizer muscles that the barbell doesn't require which is why dumbells feel so much heavier. but as for strength, stick to flat bench. i lost a lot of strength doing just dumbells so do both to maintain strength.
