This is one of the stupidest things you can do in my opinion. Just because you may not be able to see them...

Strong abs, particularly lower abs, which many people (yes YOU) neglect, can save your ass, or more specifically, your lower back.

If you've never had a back injury, believe me, you don't want one. It will halt your training real quick.

I'm speaking from personal experience of course. I even worked hard training abs, but didn't realize I was still neglecting lower abs.

See if you can do a full ROM lying leg raise *without* arching your back at all. Check to see if your back arches by trying to slip a hand between it and the floor.

Not trying to be your mother, but I wish to god someone had told me this information earlier, and I bet a lot of you haven't been training your abs since it's winter 'bulking' season and you can't see them..

of course u should train them, but the emphasis put on ab training by the general public is ridiculous. it makes me sick everytime a new ab machine comes out.

so you fixed your back problem frackal? that's good to hear if you have. mine is still bugging me, but it's because i still have imbalances from the years of injuries that i am constantly trying to correct.

Pretty close bro. It'll be another month or so before I can safely start squatting, sl deadlifting and all that again, but the pain's pretty much gone.

On a side note, I got this book for christmas w/ all these weird facts, and one of them was that the majority of the miracle exercise machines you see on TV are actually reproduced/future versions of patented
products that came out in the late 1800's early 1900's. Goes to show you that the same old scams always work.

You may have johnny. That's my whole point though. I THOUGHT my lower abs were strong, but they were actually, in the words of the doctor I go to "average to poor" while my upper abs were "very strong."

The real reason in my opinion on why you should always train your abs is because your total body strength will increase significantly. Haven't you ever noticed when you flex your abs on an exercise, the weight goes up much easier, think about it...

frackal, do you know if crunches that are slanted backwards work the lower abs? they seem to, i go heavy and feel pain through my entire abs. i have neglected leg raises lately, i might start doing them with a DB between my legs, may as well start them just in case.

Decline crunches, if done right, do work your lower abs. You can really do them 2 ways.

One way is to go from a fully upright position to about 1/2 way down, the other is to go from a fully extended, laying down position, and go about 1/2 way up. This supposedly helps to work your lower abs more and hip flexors less.

The main thing to remember when doing leg raises is to KEEP YOUR BACK FLAT. This ensures that you are working you lower abs and not the hip flexors, which is what most people usually end up working.

You can also try this exercise, it's a killer, lay face-up on a swiss ball, and hold a dumbell behind your head. Do slow crunches concentrating on your abs the whole time.

i use full ROM on the decline crunches so hopefully i'm alright, plus i just tried some leg raises and i could do those all day and all night.

my back pain is still coming from my mis-aligned spine. i had a pretty severe scoliosis and now it's only slight but still enough to bother me, oh well will keep on working it.

I have always trained my abs once per week.
I train them very hard for about 30 minutes.
Most time i'm sore for 2 or 3 days.

I get ask "how often do you train your abs?" Because joe average thinks he can have a 6 pack while drinking seveal each night.

I feel once you have done the work in the gym everything else to show abs is diet and cardio.
End of story.

Ok maybe this s a good post to get some help on . I do train my abs year round for the record but I am scared theyre getting too big as Iam already genitally fucked the top of my rib cage on both sides sticks out far almost as far as my chest ( I had to work my chest hard to make up for this ) so My profile is funny looking, as you could imagine .so larger abs would just push the bottom of my torso out and make my chest profile lag behind when in reality its large do to the fact I had to compromise for my shitty genetics
Does this make sense to anyone ? Please help any suggestions would be great especially someone with a similar predicament
Your help is needed lol....
