I think dumbells give a better range of motion and deeper stretch. I'm not a big fan of the flat barbell bench because of the stress it puts on my delts.

Everyone will have their own opinions though, because all of our bodies respond a little bit differently.

Bar, DB's hurt the wrist.
I know DB's are better, but the bar is good for the ego.

I never use the barbell anymore. Always use dumbells. Much better isolation and range of motion making for a better pump and more fiber break down thus better growth.

DB's AJC hit it on the head, way to much stress on my delts. I thought DB's would weaken my previous max on flat bench but quite the contrary I have gotten stronger. I just feel the DB's + and - Alot more than barbell it takes alot more to control the DB's maybe thats why.

Both=more growth. Only inclines put too much stress on my shoulders that's one of the reasons why I don't do inclines, ever.

bro you need to do them both, I do them in a superset, I will rep 225 about 27 times, then bounce over to the dumbbells and do the 65's for about 15, now that is a major pump.

Dumbells for definition and specific mass.

Barbells for general mass and strength.

I stick strictly to dumbells. I started to use them when I seperated my shoulder at work. If I feel my shoulder start to give I can just drop the dumbell. The barbell would hurt! lol. I have also noticed I get a better stretch from the dumbells.

I agree with 2Thick. But what I've also seen, is people with shitty flat benches, tend to stay with "incline" because "it works better" or dumbells because "they isolate better(which is true)" but at the same token, I think a lot of these people's problems is that they're scared to confront their weaknesses: bench presses

If bar is uncomfortable for you-stick to it!Squads, chins, deadlifts, bent over rows are all very uncomfortable, and your body tries to adjust to make sure next time you do it,it will not hurt so much.Your body GROWS,that's how it work!

I like the pump that I get from the DBs. Gotta go heavy with them though. Barbell is the mass builder but my rotators scream when I use it. Using the DBs will improve your bench.

You could ask my wife that question and get the same answer as me. She has gotten out of bed and stub her little toe more time than I care to remember,or should I say more times than I care to be yelled at!

DB's.... more range and versatility + I can do a few sets watching my favorite shows.

The way I figure it, if your going to watch the "boob tube", You might as well make worth your while.

Yes, but will your "ego" make you grow? Something to think about. Stick with dumbells and go in slow and controlled fashion and get a "full range of motion" on every rep. Swap around and use barbells every now and then, to shock the muscles even more.

To expound on 2Thicks comment. Barbells for mass and strength because you can lift more weight with a bar as ancillay muscles don't come into play. For instance-- not very many people that can flat bench 400lbs could dumbell bench 200lb dumbbells.Mix in dumbbells for definition and to build ancillary strength so you can increase the weight on bar exercises.

I use bar and DB.
Flat, Incline and decline.
Smith machine and free.
Strict form at all times, reps to failure and drop sets.
Keeps those muscles guessing what's comming next.
LOL
