Most say you can only do one or the other. However with calorie cycling its possible. Heres what I and others have done with great results. The first 3 days you diet hard, keeping carbs under 150 grams/day and total cals at your bmr. You train heavy as normal. After 3 days of carb depletion your bod/muscles are starving for carbs and glycogen. The remaining 4 days of the week you eat BIG. Tons of cals, carbs and protein. ON these days you look huge as your muscles fill up after being depleted. You continue this 3/4 cal cycle for about 6-8 weeks. Gain size and lose bodyfat.

Technically speaking, 'bulking' is when you're getting a surplus of calories (thus you're adding mass or 'bulking').

And 'cutting' is when you have a caloric deficit (thus you reduce mass or 'cut').

No matter how you look at it, this rule will not change. But calorie 'cycling' has been getting more attention lately.

I read a clinical study where subjects 'bulked' for 14 days by getting an extra 1000 cals/day over maintenance, then they 'cut' for 14 days by dropping calories to 1000 below maintenance.

At the end of 8 weeks these subjects gained twice as much muscle and lost twice as much bodyfat as the subjects that kept a constant diet.

I tried this for 6 weeks before I felt overtrained and backed off. I was 225 @17% and finished at 227@12%. So by my calcs I gained 12 lbs of muscle and lost 10 lbs of fat. I trained hard, drop sets, supersets and look a ton leaner.

consumed 1800 cals first 3 days with carbs under 150 grams so proetein around 200 grams. Big 4 days ate around 4500 cals with unlimited carbs and 300 grams of protein. Was on a light cycle of 300 deca/week and 50 mg eod of winny. Like I said the training was the big thing with supersets, dropsets,hi intensity. Felt like shit the 3 diet days and felt great the other 4. Overall it was good I just couldnt do it anytime soon, again.

Maximus, can U write down your stats. I think 200g protein sound a little low. I think that a 3 day cut, with 1,5-2g protein/lbBW, low carbs and mod. fat, E/C/A...followed by 4 days bulk, 1,5-2g protein, high carbs, low fat would be PERFECT!

There is one method, The 12 day bulk followed by 12 day cut, the so called: ABCDE-method. The guy who is behind it is Mr Torbjorn Akerfeldt. For more info: http://www.musclemedia.com/training/abcde/v58_abc1.asp

The article has been modified, but the real method says: 12days bulk, followed by 16 "cutting days".

I seem to remember Bill Phillips saying that his type of training would be "the next big thing". That was in his 3rd Supplement Review (read 3rd EAS Propaganda Review).

At the time I thought it was probably a way for him to sell bulking and cutting sups. to people at the same time. I must admit that the theory does make some sence. Interested to see if anybody else has had these kind of results?

Yes it is possible to gain lean muscle and reduce bodyfat at the same time. But by doing this you are going to also limit the amount of muscle you put on. I would rather put 25lbs of mucle on and 5lbs of fat then take care of the fat afterwards than put on 5lbs of muscle and lose 5lbs of fat.
