What kind of food do y0u guys eat before/after your workout, i.e. carb drinks before and protein shakes after?? Since I work out at night, I usually eat all my carbs before working out and try to limit my carbs after working out,i.e. high protein. What do you guys think of that?? Thanks.

Your doing it backwards. You want to spike your insulin levels by consuming simple carbs after a workout to shuttle the protien, creatine, ect. into the muscle.BTW I work out at night also, don't worry your body will use the carbs not store them as bf, just dont go overboard on them. My fav. is juice, usually white grape and a bowl of cereal. There are boatloads of simple carbs though.Do some research on diet, the subject is too indepth to cover here. Good luck

You need carbs(and many of them) following a work out. At this time simple carbs are the best for restoring glycogen. Carbs are good prior to workout but you need to make sure they are low GI carbs so they don't cause a rapid rise in blood glucose levels thus insuing an insulin spike. Low gi carbs prior to your workout will provide the body with steady and even levels of energy. Post work out your muscles are depleated so they need to be restored of thier glycogen. Simple carbs or high gi carbs will quickly and more importantly efficiently restore muscle glycogen so the muscle can begin healing and eventually growing. Another benifit of the high gi carbs post training is that they will cause and insulin spike thus shuttling the amino acids into the muscle cells. ------------------ |
