Dear friends, I am looking for some information on pgp and hushmail. I understand pgp (sp) is much safer than hushmail, can someone let me know the benefits of pgp over hushmail and also looking to delete casche from my pc, how do I go about this? I am not only talking about a simple casche format but the whole deal. Peace ------------------

This will not be technical, if you want the technical stuff just let me know... PGP= Pretty Good Privacy. And it means [i]just[\i], pretty good. It's freeware for the most part, so it's a steal if you plan on using it, and if others plan on using it as well. It requires that the recipient and transmitter both have PGP. It uses pki (the purist D-H version), or public key infrastructure. Meaning you generate two halves of a key, one public and one private. The private half encrypts the message and is only owned by the transmitter. The public half decrypts the message, this key can be used by anyone you give it to. So, when I want to use PGP to send a file to someone I use my private key to make it illegible to others. Send it out to someone who also uses PGP (and whom I've given my public key to). They get it and see it's from me and use my public key to open it. Hushmail: uses a combination of 3DES encryption and SSL (secure socket layer) to provide a secure form of hotmail. Essentially all your mail sent out (to other husmail users) is encrypted using 3DES encyption on the server-side and tunneled in a SSL session. When you log in to hushmail you will notice that it opens a SSL session for you. This provides a layer of protection against network snooping. The you type in your passphrase and allowed to log in. Any mail from other Hush users is encrypted before it arrives and decrypted once you open, but only for viewing, it remains encrypted in your inbox or other folders. So, in summary, if you want your HD cache free of any evidence encrypted or not) use Hush or Ziplip). If you feel that 4096b encryption will be enough to protect you, then use PGP....or use both. Hope this helps.

quote: Code-Code has provided a quality response re: encryption, so I'll only add the following URL: I'm not suggesting this affords complete data discretion but the product is a "top-tier" application. Review the product FAQ if you visit the site. Highlights: DataEraser meets or exceeds Department of Defense (DoD) specifications for overwriting, sanitizing and purging of hard disk drives. I might be mistaken, but you cannot use both hush or hotmail combined with PGP. Since hush and hot are web-based and none of the file creation is done on your machine but rather the server.

Hush sucks because it doesn't work half the time and the other half it is too slow. When you install PGP I would suggest you don't install the plug-ins, they are buggy. Once installed you will get an icon in your sys tray (the area by the clock). You type out your message on notepad or word or whatever, then you select all and copy it. Right click on the icon choose clipboard, then encrypt, then choose who you are going to send it to. The program will then encrypt your message and you will have an encrypted version on your clipboard. Open your email program and paste the message in the body and send it. ------------------ [This message has been edited by ulter (edited January 21, 2001).]

Thanks Ulter, do you recommend Pgp? So I encrypt the message in the manner you mention, I can then open hotmail and copy and paste the message, then send it? Thanks ------------------

C-C PGP tools has a free-space wipe. I usually defragment then wipe 12 times every few days. Does this offer any level of protection if someone steals your computer and tries to resurrect deleted emails, files, etc. F1

Yes if people you mail to have it, if the person you mail to doesn't have it and you don't have their "key" it won't do much. Right.
