I ALWAYS use a belt. Always, I don't care if it makes my back weaker like some people say. Its better to use one and not risk a major back injury then to use one and just develop a little (tiny) bit stronger of a lower back... Not worth it for me!

there is a consensus amoung every single guru i have ever heard that a belt should not be worn except for maxing (or close to it) on deadlifts, squats, etc.

I agree with d, you dont need a belt unless you are within 85% of your 1RM, then it is appropriate. Otherwise, you are depriving the stabilizing work of your lower abdominals as well as lower back. Many belt addicts have a pronounced 'pooch' (and let me avoid flames by saying not everyone developes such a pooch) which can be avoided by allowing the abs to stabilize the weight rather than a belt.

Sorry if you already know, but there is a common misconception about belts. Many people think they are used for back support. They are really used to prevent hernias. They keep your stomach from bulging out and tearing tissue, they really have very little to do with your back.

The belt does help support your back especially when you thighten it tight around you. Next time try lifting without it and see how your back pulls. Then put the belt back on and see the difference...

I used to use a belt on squats, deadlifts and overhead presses. Now I don't. I feel they ultimately cause imbalances in your lower back. Your poundages initially drop off a little bit, but build back up.

I only use a belt when maxing out on deads. I don't do that but a couple of times a year.

I use it on back day, on squats, and on heavy overhead presses.

I don't wear a belt. There is no need for it if you have a well-developed lower back and abdominals. As a note, I do not max out on deads or squats.

My buddy who weighs 180 pounds cleans and snatches over 300 pounds without using a belt.

I wear one however my training partner doesn't. Remember ever body structure is different. My training partner is about 5 9" with short legs. For him to do a parallel squat is like a joke, He moves down about 8 to 10 inches. Now myself being 6 2" with long legs I have to go down about twice as much as him and my back bends to much naturally. Wearing a belt is a very smart thing for some people.

I don't use a belt and my abs have become very developed from them being used as stabilizers now. I do deadlifts for sets of 5 with 450 and I don't need a belt. I feel as though I can keep my form stricter without it, it forces me to do everything right.

Hey Ratboy, I am 5'9" and it is much farther than 8-10 inches for a parallel squat. Just want you to know I do ass to the floor squats.
Don't knock people at my height because you don't have any legs and a weak lower back that makes doing squats hard for you. Also, beginners wear belts more than experienced lifters.
