Jeep, if you have never used them do not start. The plates are there so the achilles tendon does not get stretched as much as it would without the plate. Just stretch more before working out and skip the plate. Besides, you don't see people walking around with 10 lb plates under their feet, do you? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

several of the most successful bodybuilders of all time swear by it(arnold). I think if you use it occasionally it would be a good way to hit your muscles in a diff fassion ![]() ![]() ![]()

I use a mat under my heels instead to help keep my back a little more upright. I find that with long ass legs like mine, the deeper you go in the squat, the more you begin to lean forward. (I believe that's why Arnold did the same thing as he said in his encyclopedia). [This message has been edited by bigpun (edited January 12, 2001).] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I use 10 lbs plates under my feet. My femurs are long so I have to put my knees way in front of my toes when I do full squats. My knees used to hurt like hell from doing this so I started using 10 lbs plates and my knees do not hurt now. I have tried stretching my achilles throughout the day but when I squat all the way down my heels still come up off of the ground. Using the 10 lbs plates was a life saver for me. If you can get away without using them then go for it but if you are physically unable to keep your heels on the ground then use the plates. giantset ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Was taught to always elevate your heels if you don't want glutes to start bulging out on the sides. Makes a nice high round glute when you elevate your heels. Still go deep, ass to the floor. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I do this off and on depending on what i want to hit. With a plates under my heels, I feel it isolates my quads more and without it i feel i get a better overall leg workout with hams and glutes included with quads. To me, the added plates just isolate the quads more while minimizing the hams and glutes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

i would try it both ways and see what you like best.I have tried it both ways and prefer doing them with no plates. You are more stable standing flat footed. And squat to the floor. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I use 5lb plates only when I get into heavier poundages, simply cause it helps to stabilize my posture while squatting. Now on the other hand, I use a 2X4 with grip tape on it while doing front squats...that in itself will ensure you nail your quads totally and involve very little in the glute area. Definately feel the hams & glutes working harder when i stand on plates. Smith machine squats will end up screwing your lower back, imo. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Hmmm. Maybe I'll try it with plates next week. I haven't done that in so long that I don't remember how it felt. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

i like to use 10's some times, i read somewhere that it isolates the quads more, and that is how i feel it. i dont throw out the smith machine either. i use it every couple months, i like to do high reps on it(20-25). just another view, good luck ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Smith machine is good for one-legged squats, but places about a 30 percent more load on your lower back for conventional squats as opposed to a bar. It also forces you into a straight vertical groove. I don't like the smith for much. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I'm calling bullshit on everyone always saying to use "ass to the floor" squats. Unless you are 1) very flexible or 2) very short or 3) very short and flexible, ATF squats are a very quick way to mess up your knees by overstressing the tendons/ligaments. If it works for you fine, but I squatted 375 to just below parallel for a long time and built up great legs, then I tried 250 "ass to floor", and my knees never hurt so bad in my life. Why bother when parallel works as well? Even in powerlifting, you only need to break parallel. Besides, from what I see in the gym on a daily basis, people should be told to try to make it at least halfway to parallel first. Damn "half squatters" are everywhere! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

yes Arnold use to use the 2x4 as well. I tried them with plates and without, I like it better without. As far as the ATF squats go, I'm 6ft. and wouldn't have it any other way, If you are getting terrible knee pains from doing ATF more than likely you're bouncing up from the knees, or its an excuse so you can do partial squats with more weight for a bigger ego. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Why do I need excuses, if I go parallel? If it's good enough form for competition, and my quads look great, why should I expose myself to potential injury? If I wanted to boost my ego, I'd use 500 pounds and do half squats. Though even half squats have their place in strength training. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Got to agree with Stalker. Parallel with good form and not to fast will do just fine! Everyone in my gym is a half squatter if they squat at all. Saw cobwebs on the cage last time. hehehe ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
