Drug Approved As First-Line Breast Cancer Treatment

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The US Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) (FDA) has approved Novartis Pharmaceuticals' Femara (letrozole) tablets as first-line hormonal treatment for advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women, the company announced late Wednesday.

The FDA's final decision on Femara comes about a month after an advisory panel to the agency unanimously voted that the drug should be cleared for marketing.

The Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee enthusiastically backed Femara based on Novartis' research comparing the drug with a generic version of tamoxifen, the gold standard treatment for advanced breast cancer.

Femara acts by blocking estrogen production. It was initially approved by the FDA in 1997 as treatment for advanced, hormonally sensitive breast cancer that had not responded to other treatments. The drug is currently marketed in 75 countries.

Novartis believes Femara may also have potential early in the course of breast cancer and is studying the drug as a pre-surgical therapy.

Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor, very similar to anastrozole (a.k.a. arimidex).

Letrozole was designed to make Tamoxifen obsolete. A study was done last November that showed that it beat out Tamoxifen, currently the gold standard in anti-estrogen therapy, by a significant margin. Note however that they measured results my tumor size and inhibition of growth, not serum estrogen levels. In the medical community it is an anti-cancer drug, new and untested. Expect it to be expensive.

Is good to know about another alternative to stop gyno,I hope don't be more expensive than Arimidex.
