I KNOW THAT THIS IS ME THIS HAD TO BE WRITTEN BY SOMEONE I KNOW IT IS ME AND I KNOW IT IS MANY OF YOU DON'T DENIY IT. THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE!!!!!! :Muscle dysmorphia What is muscle dysmorphia? In efforts to fix their perceived smallness, people with muscle dysmorphia lift weights, do resistance training, and exercise compulsively. They may take ster*ids or other muscle-building drugs, a practice with potentially lethal consequences.
In almost all cases, people with muscle dysmorphia is not small at all. Many have well-developed musculature, and some even compete in body building competitions. Muscle dysmorphia may be one kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder. People with this problem cannot or will not stop their excessive exercise even when they are injured. They will not give up their unhealthy steroid use even when they fully understand the risks involved.
Family members and concerned friends may be able to persuade the person to at least get an evaluation by focusing on the problems caused by the behaviors, such as job loss, relationship failure, and physical harm. Nonetheless, about half of people with this problem are so convinced of their perceived smallness that they refuse help and continue their excessive exercise and steroid use. For those who enter treatment, cognitive-behavioral therapy combined with medication holds promise. The best place to start is an evaluation by a physician trained in sports medicine. Ask for a referral to a mental health counselor who also works with athletes. After both professionals have completed their evaluations, consider their recommendations and choose a course of action that is in your own best interests. ------------------

Ha fuck dat I disagree completely. I dont perceive it as a sickness! I merely think its a constant obsession to exceed what you thought possible... Dude, dont worry about it at least we are much more self conscious, and aware of what we are doing than anorexia nervosa.

This so called condition has been around for quite a while. It does not apply to most of 'us'. It is a condition that can happen to anyone and it is where the person in question believes he is small. He usually wears 2 or 3 t-shirts and a jumper to help make himself look bigger. You will never see him/her wearing shorts either. Despite some of these people being quite big they still look at themselves as small. Most of 'us' realise when we are big but still like to improve on that, these guys/girls do not, they are always small. Peace ------------------

Does an alcholic admit he's one, NO. I think if you had muscle dysmorphia, the first thing you would do is deny it also.

My girlfriend wrote a paper on this issue. She thinks I fall in this category. Although I disagree, I can see why she thinks so. I see my self as small, I don't wear shorts coz I feel my legs and calf's a not big enough. I never wear tank tops, or "reveal" my self in the summer while training coz I feel that I'm not big enough to do so. I need to be on the sauce year round coz if I don't, I fall in a state of depression, anxiety sets in thus the unwillingness to lift occurs. I am dependent on them. I will not give them up -not that she is trying to get me off them, shit she takes them as well- but I realize that I may have some issues. I once went to a club with her, danced a little -funny to see a 5 8' 235 lb man dance - and was so paranoid of having lost weight that once home I went straight to our bathroom and injected a gram of enanthate. As I sit here and typed this stuff I think to my self.......WHO GIVES A RATS ASSHOLE, I LOVE IT !!!!!! [This message has been edited by Saizen (edited January 11, 2001).]

I can relate to many of the things said in that article. It kind of sucks, but at the same time, its exciting, when you are the biggest guy amongst a group of people you are with, kind of makes you feel good, ya know?

"Withering away to frailty" is the last thing I am worried about. I do worry about becoming a fat slob. I love working out. I love the way I feel during and after a workout. To me the only better feelings are sex and the feeling of being loved. I will admit that I am obsessed with looking like a person from the magazines. I will admit that I am sef-concious about my body, and that I am always looking in the mirror. Narcissism maybe. I don't think that my obssesion with working out can or ever will cause problems in any of my relationships or responsibilities. I think this improves these and many other areas of my life. So if I have muscle dysmorphia..I am glad!!! ------------------

My opinion, that does not relate to most of us here. When I'm done with a cycle, or hell, even when I'm not on, I can look at myself in the mirror and think, 'Damn, I'm big as shit. YYYYEEEAAAAAAHHHHH!! That right!!!THats right!!! Get back!!! I'm BIG!!'. LMAO right now. Even though I can still want to get bigger, I don't feel like I'm small and puny. THats what that disorder is.

I agree with mrflaco totally. My biggest fear isn't really being small or weak necessarily (although that would definitely suck), but I never wanna look like these average, couch potato mother fuckers. I wanna look absolutely perfect. No flaws. I know that will never happen, but it keeps you goal-oriented and making progress. And while I'll readily admit that I'm somewhat addicted to pumping iron, it has been the best thing that I ever got involved in. As human beings, we are inhereintly weak and dependent on other things. Everyone has their cruch. It could be recreational drugs, alcohol, a bible, work, sex, etc. My addiction is the iron game. Call it a "disorder" if you want. Ever since I started bodybuilding several years ago, I have more confidence, more self-esteem, my health is 10 times better, and it fulfills (for me at least) that higher-level need of self-actualization, the working toward and attaining of goals...potential fulfillment. Maybe we are afflicted individuals. Maybe we are sick motherfuckers in need of a pyche evaluation. Just throw me set of heavy squats any day over a fucking cigarette or bottle of Jim Beam. Yeah, call me a mental case, Mr. Psychologist, then I'll show you my six pack and we'll see who can bench more while you sit there with enough cholestrol flowing through your veins to choke a horse. Sorry, all. Didn't mean to go on a rampage there. Gotta go get my daily pump fix with shoulders and calves. Son of a bitch! I must be crazy...... ------------------

That's the dumbest f**cking thing I've ever heard in my life! It was invented by some pencil neck bitch that has a complex about men with bigger muscles than him! Bodybuilding is a f**cking sport and a lifestyle, there's nothing wrong with striving to be the best you can be, and looking and feeling good at the same time. EXPLAIN this to me, why is it that when baseball players, footbal players, track+feild athletes, and hockey players spend everyday of their fricken lives obsessing about their sport, training, and ignoring their family they are looked upon as being dedicated winners, but when bodybuilders dedicate themselves to their sports they have a f**cking dysfunction? ANSWER: WE, AS BODYBUILDERS, ARE SOUROUNDED BY A SEA OF HATERS AND WILL ALWAYS BE AS LONG AS WE LOOK BETTER THAN THEM AND KEEP F**CKING THEIR WOMEN! LONG LIVE BODYBUILDING AND DEATH TO ALL THE HATERS! ------------------

Funny shit....... I fit into the category of thinking that I am small when alot of people ask what the hell I am taking because I am "BIG"...... It must be the Muscletech.... hahahahah... Something else that is weird is that alot of people that I thought were big before I crossed over to the dark side look small to me now......... Oh well when I get to 210 then I will want to be at 220 and then 230 and so on.......... "B"

BigJay....Bro, # of posts aside, I respect you and your knowledge....But I'm not sure you belong on this board or on "supplements" for that matter. Lately, you've been posting nothing but negative posts??? Maybe you should join the Natural Board over at NaturalBodybuilding.com....hehehehe. Every Man (and Woman) that decides to use performance enhancing drugs makes that choice on his/her own. Peer Pressure sometimes has something to do with it but it's your body and your decision to do it. So if you don't like working out and taking "supplements"....THEN DON'T!!!!!! And leave all of us SMALL wanna-be-Mr. Olympia's alone....cause we're happy and that's all that matters.....QUAD

Theres a recent book out called The Adonis Complex its a good read. explains all this stuff. In fact i recently taught a class to 8th graders on male body disorders. All bodybuilder have muscle dysphormia but in most cases its a healthful and positive form. Leave it to the press just to report the negative side. ------------------

I was in a psych class when that article came out (three years ago I think). Got ragged on for a whole class period. Funny thing is that a couple smaller guys who lifted all the time but got nowhere, were the most vocal in proclaiming me diseased.

I personally don't give a dam how people see it, but I cant understand how this can be labeled as a disorder. For most of us this is a way of life and a habit that can only lead to healthiness. It is understood and well known that AS does have its side effects but as we all know "too much of aything is bad for you." I really can't see how this can be compared to anorexia nervosa, I've never heard of anyone beign hospitalized for muscle dysmorphia. I can imagine going to the doctor because i'm too healthy.
Amateur Bodybuilder Posts: 63 |
But the thing is, most of use are "healthier" with all the AS we take than these Average Joes who smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day and eat like total ass. It seems like everybody has a damn disorder these says if they aren't absolutly run-of-the-mill average. Fuck that! I want chicks to dig me and men to fear me. I'm gonna stand out in a crowd...... ------------------

I can totally relate, when Im off my cycle I feel weak and unmotivated. When I am at the gym I look in the mirror as see myself different then I do when Im using AS. No matter how many compliments I get I still feel small and week when Im not using thats the down fall for using AS. Im sure alot of you can relate to me.
