guys I seem to be having this big problem lately. I put bodybuilding, working out, eating, reading this board and worrying about what kind of shit I want to use for upcoming cycles, ect, as my #1 priority, right over school. Last semester I did horribly because I would have rather worried about eating and working out then studying or taking care of business. It has put me in a hole right now, I'm on academic probation and still seem to hold bodybuilding as my priority. I'm about to leave for school tomorrow and have my classes planned out. I'm taking an easier workload and easier classes than last semester. I know I need to do well, 1. get out of academic probation, 2. my parents are mad and if I fuck up again, there goes my ass, 3. for gods sake I need to get my shit together. does anyone else, even any of you not in college, seem to have this type of problem where it interfers with things that are important?

I am in the Quarter System. I hate Semesters. They are too long!

I did fine last semester but bodybuilding is by far my number one priority. It is the backbone of my life...everything else grows around it. Everything I do revolves around my eating schedual and training schedual. I use my down time to study. It is a greatway to rest the body and be productive at the same time. I think about it non-stop. I live for it though and it is what gets me through the days. I relize society thinks that school or career is what should drive one but I don't think that is neccessary. You only live once...Why torture yourself? Do what you like. Do what makes you feel good. Work school into your bodybuilding...Not bodybuilding into school. Some my say that the priorities are backwards there, but as long as you arn't hurting anyone else, then do what makes you happy. ------------------

Clemdog, how old are you by the way? Im 26 and I take 3 classes (9 hours) each semester including summers and my gpa is 3.7 or something, and I work part time also. Ive noticed that I couldnt do this when I was younger as I did not have the discipline. I was in the same situation with the parents as you are when I was 18-19. So if you are that age, you better put school first because I wont graduate until Im 30 and I kick myself in the ass everyday for screwing off when I was younger (yes, compared to completing college, bodybuilding is screwing off). Im doing fine now, but I cant help but to think where I would have been if I stayed in school and finished at a lot sooner time. Trust me, if you drop out or fail out of college, a couple years in the real world will put the importance of a college education into your mind. Thats what my sig. is about by the way... ------------------

I was in exactly the same position, probation and all. My wakeup call was goin through my old flex mags and reading an article about ken brown right after he won the nationals to get his pro card. Basically this guy was working as a boilermaker or somethin 10 hours a day even though he had his pro card. Even though he won the nationals he can't earn shit from bodybuilding. Anyways he's still not makin the top 15 anywhere and he's still workin in that factory. Now just think if he had just gone to college and got his degree even though he's not makin money in bodybuilding atleast he could be workin at a nice job instead of this. It's all about time management. My mindset right now is I got 2 years left so go to school, come home and workout, eat perfectly, and then party within reason on weekends. Simple formula.

Taking 19 hours this semester. "season is over" But Its one of the hardest things to do. I allways get up early to go lift but those 8am classes allways seem to lag behind. Its hard But in the long run If you don't make grades you don't play. And you will just be in school even longer. 4 years is a joke You can't have a good degree in anything in less than 5 years at the least. Priorities must be made and "KEPT". Its hard. But keep it up. Same problem with me. I studied anabolics harder than any subject I ever had (except Advanced Investment Principles- LOVED that class!!--seriously). Set the priorities then go after it with the same enthusiasm you give lifting. I graduated last semester, worked out hard, worked 30+ hours per week, and took 19 hours. It can be done. Just do it. ...bd

beezers I feel the same way and Superdave I understand exactly what you are saying. I had a hard previous semester but I really cant blame that for my shortcomings. I just need to know what I have to do this semester. If bodybuilding is going to be one of my priorities then I need to make sure school is right there along with it. Beezers you made a great point about how everything revolved around eating and training, you used your down times as a time to get your studying in and being productive. I live in an apartment for the first time this year, BTW I'm a sophomore, almost 20, and my roommates and everything else going around there was a BIG distraction for me. People in and out all the time, it seemed as if my roommates never had to study, just party, 2 of my roommates smoke up a couple times every day. I was very close to taking off this semester but decided not to because I didnt find anyone to sublet the apartment to in my spot. I really know that one of the biggest downfalls to last semester was the apartment and my roommates. I will just have to do something different about it this coming semester, like spending more time in the library to concentrate, but then again, how will I eat when in the library? LOL

Sounds like you need to get a different place to live thats lowkey and quiet. Ride out this semester if you cant find another place, then find the dullest/quietest person you can to live with. Trust me it makes all the difference in the world for school AND bodybuilding gains. If you have a brother or sister that would be your roommate and who is low key thats even better because they are family and predictable. ------------------

thanks for the replies guys. I also need to get a part time job to help pay for the apartment so I will probably be working a day in the week and the weekends. I just need to concentrate on my work harder and filter out the distractions.

i put bodybuilding above school. i read the board, and study and plan out my cycle. If you just pay attention in class you should be fine. Don't sit in class and add up dosages like me. it sucks when u get caught!

Clemdog, the bros who say they put other thingds above school and still do fine in school are all well and good, but since you are on academic probation and your ass is in a sling with your parents I would play it safe and try to get a 4.0 this semester or damn close if you can. Im 26 and the best feeling is when I show my parents and grandparents the report card with all A's on it then everyone crys (yea, theyre easy to please). Ive recognized my past mistakes and I am making good now and it was the hardest decision to make when I decided to go back to school but now I realize it was the best decision of my life and I hope you dont have to be in a position to have to make that decision years from now knowing you could have already been done with school by the time your my age. Ok Danielson, Im done ------------------

I started bodybuilding my freshman year. I am now graduating with an engineering degree 2.9 GPA, in 4 years, and have gained over 100 lbs in that time, about 70 pure muscle. U have to balance things out, when I was natural it was much harder, with gear u can slack off alot more and still get good results. Look at it this way, u only need 1.5 hours a day or so to train, the rest is eating. Make use of protein bars and powders, on the way to class and between class. ------------------

I think you need to know what you want to do of course your bodybuilding makes you who you are. Im live in Silicon Valley and I have no degree and work for one of the big players in Networking. Education is important and you always need to keep current. Thats what its all about what you know and how much experience you have doing it. Bodybuilding RULES !!!

University should be #1 (unless you have millionaire parents) because you only have 4-8 post-secondary years to get a degree (or more) that will help you financially succeed in life. As JuiceBoy stated, time management is the key. I will always place the thirst for knowledge above all superficial goals in life. You should not be training more than 6-8 hours per week so what seems to be the problem? Diet can also be managed if you plan ahead. It seems that there are other obstacles in your way...think about what they might be.

I've gone through all sorts of hobbies and things but bodybuilding is the one thing in my life I've never lost interest in. Naturally I place it as my number one priority. You just have to learn how to manage your time with it.

no problem unless you are putting bodybuilding in front of sex. then maybe worry.

Man screw working out. Get you school back on track. Stop looking for the immediate self gratification. Your education will enable you to live your life the way you want to live it. Much easier to wait another few years until graduation and then be able to comfortably afford what you want to do. There's no money to be made in body building. It is not a career. Put some of that training passion where it should be. It will pay off. As in many things, you will get better with age. I'm 32 now and other than my recent injuries feel and look better that ever. I enjoy driving my new Vette to the post office to pick up my gear. All of which were made possible by my education. BPP

I got the same problem! Spend much more time in the gym/on the track than in class! However this IS NOT ALWAYS a bad thing. I believe that BB has actually helped my grades. It brings discipline into your life. It makes you plan things out. Besides I find that my mind is most clear and able to take things in after I've worked out/trained. Don't know if this is the same for others, but you just gotta be realistic - it's possible to train hard and work hard, they might even help each other!

I put university above any hobbies or enjoyment, and it pays off. Just like hard training and proper nutrition pay off with a nice physique, so paying attention in lectures and studying at home pay off with a nice gpa. [However, I asked how some of you guys seem to stay on top of training, eating, and most of all, gear, while still attending university and nearly got crucified on another post because my priorities were more with school]

Been out of school for 10 years, but when I was in chasing tail was a bigger priority than lifting. . . ------------------

With proper time management you can get it all done. School is expensive so get your moneys worth and get a good education. This doesn't mean you can't have a good time bodybuilding, and take it serious too. Plenty of scholar athletes get it done, so you can too.

WOW-- I spend more time in the gym than I do studying! Im in flight school so I have to balance it no matter what... my main concern right now is lifting and still will be.. ITS HARD getting into my plane when my ass is SORE.. hahaah LIFT ON and just try to get your work out of the way while you drink a shake or eat a meal... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~SNAKE

CLEMDOG, ARE YOU MY LONG LOSE TWIN??? I'm almost 20, in my second year here at Texas A&M, and also had a "not-up-to-par" semester, but did my first cycle and gained 30 pounds!! This semester, I've really got to hit the books, 'cause I'm planning on graduating in 3 years with a double major in English and Spanish and going to law school... I like the idea that the money you'll make with the education will finance your bodybuilding, that's sooo true...where are you at man, drop me a line sometime... ------------------

i feel exactly as conan, i have one more year left till i have my mechanical engineering degree. I put bodybuilding first in a lot of ways, but i also put it off for the betterment of my mind which i know will take me a lot farther than my muscles!

Wow, I thought I was the only one.. Atleast you are still in school... I dropped out this semester because I was having problems balancing school w/ the gym. I would often leave school early so I could go workout. My problem is, I workout, go to school, and still work almost 40hrs per week... I love getting up in the morning and being able to just go to the gym isntead of having to go to school and only get a half-ass workout in before work. But I'm torn.. I want to go to school and make alot of money one day.. but Im so obsessed with becoming a big bad motherfucker that its hard to concentrate on school... I know some guys who have no education and had a kick ass job fall in their lap.. but what are the chances? Im hoping i'll get a lucky break like that one day. |
