Even if it is cleaned all the information you delete will be able to be restored in most cases. Bump, I need to permanently clean mine too.

by deleting it can be brought back, but I don't THINK that they can if you rewrote over a .txt, or if you did a full reformat...not 100% sure tho.

Yank your hard drive and get another one. If you want to keep it a little longer, but you want to be able to wipe it clean if the FEDs are knocking on your door, download a virus on a floppy from a hacker's website. They have some that will kill your hard drive the instant it's opened. I mean, completely kill!

I agree with Rocco, if you really think the heat is coming....get that computer out of your house. Even if the harddrive is formated, they can still pull stuff out of it. You could also stash it at a friend's house for safekeeping until the pressure blows over. Second best thing is to get a new hard-drive.

No commercial apps can prevent low-level restructering of data from a disk.

It's a very simple problem. Disks are magnetic, every time you write to a disk you alter the magnetic properties of a small section of a platter. When you erase, wipe, PGP-wipe, Eliminate, Wash any section of the platter you simply re-arrange that area to be illegible by the computer. But not other devices that can reverse engineer the magnetic media.

But, if you have a low-level disk assay machine, you can very easily pick out all the data that was on that platter/disk/zone/node and write it to another disk.

The cost of data recovery isn't very expensive either. If you're not in a hurry it'll run from 200-500 USD, if you want it same day 3000-15000 depending on volume and data size.

It would be cheaper just to get a new hard drive and install that. Just save your old hard drive and stick it back in there long after everything blows over.

Nope. Well, if you own a magnet that strong I would be very surprised.

I forgot the exact strength needed to completely rearrange a drives poles, but it is pretty stinkin' strong.

If he's really concerned then just toss the harddrive. They're so cheap now, it's not even worth screwing around with if the FEDs are getting involved.

If you're just concerned, then do a low-level format and reinstall your software. Yes, it is still possible to restore your data, but it's friggen difficult and unpredictable. Unless you're a really big fish, I don't think they'd even bother.

In general, keep your information OFF your computer. Don't use hotmail, use hushmail/zipmail. Delete your internet cache (in IE it's under Tools/Internet Options), and keep your computer clean to begin with.

The object to get rid of all erased data is to format the drive and write O's across the entire drive and then write 1's across the entire drive. If you do this there is no way of getting ANY data off the drive. It's the governments standard. Norton makes one I know for sure. Later, Green

Green,
Sorry bro, the 0's and 1's thing is an urban legend. Writing to a disk with anything is simply that, just writing.

You can still send the drive off to any data recovery corporation along with a PO number and get pretty much anything off the drive.

The governement's process for removing data off a disk is to obliterate the disk, trust me, I know. I used to work for DoD (DISA, NRO, DMDC, Snet, and the state department) and the NSA routinely adivises each and every department to obliterate obsolete disks.

Hard drives are really cheap now. Just get a new one.
Some of the drive wiping utilities do a great job, but how good of a job do thye really do. I never tried once and had limited success.

HAHA

get PGP 7.0 or 6.5.8 DUHHHHHHH

Well the FBI dropped by a friends house about 9 months ago and took his computer because he was doing something "illegal" (THE STUPID BASTARD DIDN'T USE A PROXY) and the FBI keeps postponing the court date because he locked his computer up with some powerfulL algor's with PGP.

GET PGP AND NO ONE CAN GET YOUR SHIT UNLESS YOU STOLE A COUPLE HUNDRED MILLION BUCKS THEN THEY MIGHT USE ENOUGH PROCESSING POWER TO CRACK YOUR PASSPHRASE.

You can wipe and rewrite and they can still get fingerprints and ghosts and shit I don't understand. Throw the fucker out. That's why they take the puter when they get you. Most of your shit is stored someplace else anyway. Get a new hard drive maybe?

u dont need to buy a new harddrive. just take the windows recovery disk and put it in the computer while it is booting up. the setup should come on and it will tell u that it will erase everything that is saved, it will put u back to when u first got the comp. and for the guy that wanted to get his downloads back for school: go to the temp internet files file, i think it is in the windows folder. that might work. email me for anymore questions or just post them.

First off, PLEASE post part of the sources Email addy for the sake of the people here.

Second:
All these posts, and for what?

The Feds aren't going to bust in and take your computer away from you because you ordered some shit from him before.

If you are that worried, or you had something to do with the bust (your shit got seized etc etc) just open the damn puter up and unplug the drive--take it to a friends house and wait till it all blows over.
